The Sharks were apparently taking notes. After
coughing up 2-goal leads in back to back games, San Jose turned the tables on
the Montreal Canadiens, scoring a pair of 3rd period goals to get the game to
overtime where Macklin Celebrini ended it with a power play goal. It was an
incredible 4-3 comeback given the Sharks played less than 24 hours earlier in
Toronto and the Canadiens last played on Saturday.
Montreal may still
be wondering what happened in this game. They were cruising against a flat
Sharks lineup that was struggling to do anything offensively. San Jose came
back from deficits twice last year against Montreal, but this one was an all
around gritty comeback.
If there was a goat in the game, that honor
should be bestowed on Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes who elected to step in
front of Collin Graf who was pursuing the puck in the overtime. Dobes would be
called for interference, which setup Celebrini's power play heroics. Ivar
Stenberg setup Celerini for a one-time chance from the right dot that beat
Dobes to cap an unlikely comeback.
The Sharks looked like the team
that played 24 hours earlier through the first 9 minutes of regulation. The
Canadiens enjoyed the last 3 days off and had the majority of chances through
the first half of the opening period. They enjoyed 16 shot attempts through
that span.
Ty Dellandrea marked his return to the lineup by taking a
holding the stick penalty at 10:45 to put San Jose in a bit of a jam. The
penalty kill, which surrendered 2 goals on Monday night, snuffed out the
Canadiens threat.
Macklin Celebrini potted his 4th goal of the season
a minute after Dellandrea's penalty expired when he stepped in front of a Jake
Evans pass near the Canadiens blueline before taking three strides and lifting
a puck over Jakub Dobes' left shoulder. Will Smith was pestering Evans along
the left wing boards and forced the Canadiens centerman to rush his pass, which
he partially fanned on. That served the puck up on a silver platter fro
Celebrini who was streaking into the Montreal zone .
A fluky bounce
would cost San Jose at 16:38. Defenseman Dmitry Orlov had position to stop the
puck from entering the Sharks zone, but it bounced past him, allowing Juraj
Slafkovsky to skate past him before sliding a puck to Nick Suzuki on the right
side. Suzuki was all by his lonesome and had all day to pick a spot that he
would not miss.
Slafkovsky undressed Darnell Nurse early in the 2nd
period on a play from the right side, flipping the puck past the Sharks
defenseman to the left before skating around him on the right. Slafkovsky then
regained control of the puck before cutting across the top of the crease and
slipping a puck past Alex Nedeljkovic for his 2nd goal of the season.
Cole Caufield added his 6th of the season with just under 6 minutes remaining
in the period to extend Montreal's lead to a pair of goals. The winger
one-timed a Suzuki feed from behind the net after Jacob Trouba left the left
post to pursue him. That left Caufield all by himself in the spot between the
left circle and the end line. Caufield's shot tucked inside the right post for
the 3-1 lead.
Ivar Stenberg caught an Alexandre Texier high stick to
give the Sharks their 1st power play of that game at 17:27. San Jose could only
muster a Mason Marchment chance from the doorstep, but otherwise did little to
challenge Dobes.
San Jose cut into the Canadiens lead when Michael
Misa finally scored his 1st goal of the season 5:36 into the 3rd period. Kiefer
Sherwood carried the puck up the right side in on a 2-on-2 break after Misa
forced a turnover near the Sharks blueline. Sherwood drew defenseman Noah
Dobson over before sliding it to Misa on the off wing. Misa quickly collected
the pass and slipped it past Dobes with Lane Hutson late to cover.
Arbor Xhekaj gifted the Sharks a power play at 9:33 of the period when he tried
to engage Michael Kesselring in front of the Montreal net. Kesselring never had
a chance to get his gloves off as Xhekaj locked him up. Both were assessed
roughing penalties, but Xhekaj was given an extra unsportsmanlike conduct
minor.
San Jose made good use of the man-advantage when Tyler Toffoli
bagged his 3rd of the season off a Celebrini feed with 24 seconds left in the
Sharks power play.
Canadiens head coach will surely bring up the
Xhekaj and Dobes penalties, which gave the Sharks the juice they needed to
comeback in what looked like a Montreal cake walk.
Game Notes:
* Michael Kesselring skated in is 200th career NHL game.
* Alexander Wennberg was a medical scratch after suffering a lower body injury
in Toronto on Monday night. Ty Dellandrea took Wennberg's spot in the lineup,
making his 3rd appearance of the season.
* Former Sharks defenseman
and Montreal native Marc-Edouard Vlasic was roaming the press box. The Sharks
parted on contentious terms, when the defenseman was bought out of the 2025-26
season.
* Macklin Celebrini finished the night with 2 goals and an
assist for his 5th multi-point game of the season. The Bell Centre fans were
quick to boo Celebrini whenever he touched the puck.
* Zack Ostapchuk
was 6-of-8 on draws to lead San Jose. Celebrini was 8-for-23, the wunderkind
has something to work on.
