The Sharks hit the road for the 1st of 6 away
from SAP Center on Tuesday with a stop in the Music City. Alex Nedeljkovic made
his 2nd start of the season, stopping 32 shots en route to a crazy 3-2 shootout
win over the Nashville Predators. The Sharks played solid road hockey and were
poised to win in overtime, but Steven Stamkos tied the game with 8 tenths of a
second left in regulation. After a wild overtime period, Macklin Celebrini was
the only player to score in the overtime to win it for San Jose.
Celebrini was held off the scoresheet in the regulation and overtime periods,
but he would beat Juuse Saros to help San Jose earn their 4th win of the
season.
In the overtime period Will Smith had a chance to end it on a
breakaway chance. Then Ivar Stenberg had a 2-on-1 chance with Celebrini, but
the Sharks captain missed side left. Keifer Sherwood then missed on another
breakaway chance to frustrate the Sharks.
Nashville was not short of
their own chances, but Nedeljkovic bailed out San Jose all night. He made 13 of
his 32 saves in the 3rd period and another 4 in the extra session.
Zach Ostapchuk and Nicolas Hague got the crowd into the game early with an
extended bout that resulted in both players landing big shots in the fracas.
After fighting off the Predators for the first 5 minutes of the
period, San Jose surprised Nashville with a Mason Marchment goal. The Sharks
cycled the puck in the Nashville zone before Tyler Toffoli flipped a pass out
to the front of the net from the end boards where Marchment had position on
Roman Josi for a quick shot that beat Juuse Saros for his 2nd of the season.
Hague liked the coziness of the penalty box that he returned to it at
12:06 after hooking Toffoli. San Jose had a good look midway through the man
advantage but Saros swatted it away from danger.
Ostapchuk booked his
own return engagement to the sin bin at 14:52, but his stay was longer than
Hague's after he was called for a high sticking double minor. San Jose's
penalty killers did a yeoman's job of negating all 4 minutes of the penalty.
Sharks goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic made a big save in the 3rd minute, ranging
to this left to deny Filip Forsberg a quality scoring chance.
Nashville out-shot the Sharks 10-9 in the period, fueled largely from the
4-minute power play, but San Jose carried the 1-0 lead to the 1st intermission.
The Shark had a golden opportunity to double their lead 6 minutes into
the 2nd period, but Igor Chernyshov elected to get cute with the puck rather
than shoot it from 15 feet in front of the net on a 3-on-3 break. He would then
take an interference penalty on the same shift to put the Sharks in another
hole.
Brady Skjei just missed tying the game up 15 minutes into the
frame when he got lost cutting down the slot and fired a shot off the left
post.
Will Smith missed on a golden chance with 3:30 left in the
period after dragging the puck across the lot from right to left before
attempting a backhand shot. Saros was down, but managed to stretch out his
glove hand to deny the chance.
Alex Wennberg then found himself with
the puck and nothing between he and Saros with 2:10 to play in the period. The
Sharks forward skated in on net but lifted his chance well over the crossbar.
Reid Schafer was sent off for the 2nd time in the period at 18:40 to
allow the Sharks to finish the period on the power play. They failed to take
advantage of the advantage, continuing on in the 3rd period with their slim
1-goal lead.
Will Smith wouldn't let Saris get the better of him
again. The Sharks forward carried a Michael Kesselring drop pass just inside
the right circle before snapping home his 3rd goal of the season. Kesselring
earned the primary assist for his 1st point as a Shark. Igor Chernyshov earned
the secondary assist for his 4th point of the season.
The Sharks would
not get away with their 4th minor penalty of the night after Sam Dickinson was
whistled for tripping. The Predators power play converted when Ryan O'Reilly
was allowed to take multiple hacks at the puck on the doorstep. The last
resulted in the puck flipping over Nedeljkovic to make it a 2-1 Sharks lead.
Collin Graf was moved to the top line late in the game and that move
almost paid dividends when Macklin Celebrini found his new line mate cutting
toward the net with a pass from the left circle.
Nashville pulled
Saros with 1:46 to play. That's 1:45 more than the Nashville needed.
In the shootout, O'Reilly, Foreberg and Colton were all denied by Nedeljkovic.
Stenberg led off for San Jose and was stopped by Saros.
