The Sharks wrapped up their short 2-game road
trip in St Louis on Thursday night, but they continued on without captain
Macklin Celebrini. San Jose elected to sit Celebrini, which turned out to be
the right call after Darnell Nurse deposited a Ivar Stenberg feed in overtime
as the Sharks knocked off the Blues 3-2 at the Enterprise Center in Missouri.
Celebrini practiced with the team on Wednesday and participated in the
pre-game skate but the Sharks continue to be cautious with their franchise
player. The lower body that has now sidelined him for a second straight game is
something the Sharks don't want to have manifest until something more serious.
His teammates were tasked with trying to find a way to generate some
offense in his absence. Things got off to a slot start early, which extended
the team's scoreless streak to 4 consecutive periods.
The Sharks got
caught in an outnumbered situation 3:42 into the game when Mason McTavish
gathered a Jonatan Berggren pass as he skated inside the right circle. Drawing
goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic to the right side, McTavish waited out the Sharks
goaltender before sending a pass toward the far post where Connor McMichael was
able to tap it home for his 2nd goal of the season.
San Jose spent the
majority of the period chasing the puck, failing to establish any offensive
flow. The Blues out-shot San Jose 11-3 in the frame. The Sharks only generated
13 shots in their 5-0 loss to Dallas on Sunday. The lack of shots translated
directly to their inability to put any pucks in the opposing net.
St
Louis goaltender Joel Hofer was called for tripping 6:39 into the 2nd period to
put the Sharks on the power play for the second time. The Blues killed the
penalty, but Tyler Toffoli jammed home a puck 9 seconds after the infraction
expired.
The veteran forward collected a Michael Misa feed near the
left corner before lopping back toward the net. Toffoli's initial shot attempt
was denied by Hofer, but Toffoli continued to drive toward the net and getting
a second chance to find the right side of the goal line for his 2nd goal of the
season.
San Jose started to apply more offensive pressure which
translated into another power play chance after Cam Fowler was forced to slash
Alexander Wennberg on a quality scoring chance in front of the Blues net.
St Louis generated the best scoring chance during the Sharks power
play after a soft clearing pass landed on Dillon Dube's stick for a put back
chance that missed wide left.
Ivar Stenberg nullified the
man-advantage by taking his own slashing penalty at 16:14, his 1st career
infraction. San Jose took care of that penalty, then went back on the power
play with 4.8 ticks left in the period after Brandon Carlo lofted a puck into
the stands for a delay of game penalty.
San Jose shot themselves in
the foot when Toffoli sent a blind backhand pass up the middle from the left
wing board. Dube intercepted it and race up ice on a 2-on-1 before snapping it
past Nedeljkovic for the short-handed goal and a 2-1 lead.
Colin Graf evened things up at 6:05 on a put back
chance after a Sam Dickinson shot from the right side hit Hofer and kicked out
to the slot. Graf came barreling down the lane and was in perfect position to
pounce on the big rebound.
Robert Thomas just missed putting the Blues
back on top with 3 minutes to play on a shot from the slot that banged off the
crossbar.
Nurse ended it after the Sharks controlled the puck in the
offensive zone and Stenberg found him with a rink wide pass from the right wing
boards. It was the only shot of the overtime but it was all San Jose needed.
All three of their wins have come via the extra period, but this one
differed in that San Jose had to come from behind in the 3rd period. They
achieved that and realize they can win without their captain.
Game
Notes: * The Sharks had 4 power play chances in the game and they
ended up giving up 4 short-handed shots including Dillon Dube's that resulted
in a go-ahead goal.
* Kiefer Sherwood, Sam Dickinson, Zack Ostapchuk
and Jacob Trouba combined for 22 hits between the 4 of them. Sherwood recorded
a game high 10 hits by himself.
* Michael Misa was a +2 on the night
and played a more physical game that we didn't see last season. The 2nd year
forward has bulked up this season and is using his size to play a more physical
game.
* Blues forward Jimmy Snuggerud is the son of former Shark Dave
Snugerrud. The elder played 36 games for the Sharks from 1991-93.
* The
Sharks placed forward Brett Leason on waivers earlier in the day. That likely
means Adam Gaudette is close to returning from his upper body injury.
