The Sharks wrapped up their 5-game road trip
with a gritty 20 minutes of hockey. Unfortunately it's a 60 minute game and the
host Edmonton Oilers showed San Jose what's required to compete in March. The
Sharks overcame a 3-1 deficit with a pair of 2nd period goals, but the Oilers
responded with 2 goals of their own in the 3rd period to take the 5-3 decision
at Rogers Place.
Hopefully the inexperienced Sharks were taking notes,
as the Western Conference representative in the Stanley Cup Finals the last two
seasons put on a clinic in how to take a 3rd period lead, then clamp down
defensively.
Too many white jerseys hanging out not participating in
that crucial 3rd period. The loss was San Jose's 9th consecutive loss at Rogers
Place.
Things looked promising for San Jose when Dmitry Orlov put a
Alex Wennberg past Oilers goaltender Connor Ingram 7:24 into the game. Wennberg
skated toward the top of the right circle when he saw Orlov cutting to the net
from his defensive spot on the left side. All the Russian defenseman had to do
was get a stick on the tapin from the left post.
That promise quickly
dissipated as is started to rain Oiler goals. San Jose made things easier for
their hosts by taking a penalty that put the league's top power play unit on
the ice. Even without Leon Draisaitl, who was ruled out for the remainder of
the regular season after sustaining an injury on an Ozzie Wiesblatt hit on
Tuesday, the Oilers special teams is potent.
The Sharks learned how
potent when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins put a shot from the right circle past Alex
Nedeljkovic at the 10 minute mark.
Connor Murphy scored just his 5th
goal of the season 75 seconds later. The defenseman simply threw the puck at
the net from the right point, slipping it past Nedeljkovic to the stick side.
The Sharks netminder was partially screened by Michael Misa and William Eklund
failed to make an attempt to block the shot.
Vasily Podkolzin potted
his 16th of the season at 14:18 to give the Oilers the 3-1 lead. The Sharks
coughed the puck up in their own end before Adam Henrique found Podkolzin in
the slot for a one time chance that caught the underside of the crossbar.
Pavol Regenda scored his first goal since January 23rd against the New
York Rangers. Regenda was in the lineup for the first time in the past 8 games.
The Slovakian forward floated to the shooting lane as Mario Ferraro rifled a
puck from the left point, deflecting it past Ingram from 18 feet out.
Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith teamed up to setup
a pretty scoring chance with 7 minutes left in the middle period. Celebrini
carried the puck up the left side before sliding a pass to Smith for a one time
chance from the slot.
Kiefer Sherwood tied the game at 3-3 with 5:24
remaining in the frame after a puck kicked out of the Sharks zone. There were
no Oiler skaters between Sherwood and the Edmonton goal, allowing the Sharks
forward to race up ice and snap his 21st goal of the season past Ingram.
San Jose showed in the 3rd period that they're not quite ready for
playoff push. A flat response to open the frame would cost them as Edmonton
scored twice in the first 8 minutes to put the game out of reach.
Max
Jones scored just his 2nd goal of the season 4:48 into the 3rd period to give
the lead back to Edmonton. After a strong forecheck, the Oilers worked the puck
out of the right corner to the front of the net, where John Klingberg was late
to react. Jones pounced on the puck and pushed it past Nedeljkovic.
Zach Hyman made it 5-3 at 8:12 after he put a backhand attempt past Nedeljkovic
from the Sharks doorstep. Alex Wennberg lost his defensive assignment, guarding
space two strides from the Oilers forward. With nobody between him in the net,
Hyman simply had to pick a spot that wasn't occupied by the Sharks goaltender.
He did that and the Oilers suddenly had another 2-goal lead.
Game
Notes: * The Oilers snapped Macklin Celebrini's 9-game point
scoring streak.
* Nick Leddy was inserted into the lineup and was
responsible for several turnovers. The veteran defenseman was simply lost on
the ice anytime he was counted on to move the puck.
* The Sharks are a
-22 in goal differential in the 3rd period, which is the worst in the NHL.
* Kiefer Sherwood finished with a +3 in the contest. Michael Misa
recorded a -4 for a game worse plus minus.
* Edmonton held Celebrini
to 2 shots on goal. PAvol Regenda led the sharks with 4 goals.
