The Sharks took their 3-game winning streak on
the road for the first of four games away from SAP Center on Tuesday night. San
Jose made a stop in St Paul to play the Minnesota Wild at Grand Casino Arena.
San Jose stunned the Wild at the end of October with a wild finish in overtime
when Macklin Celebrini scored on the Sharks only possession in the extra
session. Tuesday's affair ended with a similar feel except this time Celebrini
setup the game winner in overtime as San Jose steals 2 points with a 2-1 win in
the extra period.
Minnesota controlled the ice for two and a half
periods before the Sharks finally figured out to generate any offense. To the
Sharks credit their defensive schemes are working. They held the Wild to a
single goal even though it could have easily been a much worse outcome for San
Jose.
San Jose simply hung around until Will Smith tied the game in
the 3rd period. Collin Graf scored the game winner 2:41 into overtime after
Celebrini set him up with a pass between a defender's skates. Graf collected
Celebrini's feed then deeked Wild goaltender Filip Gustavsson with a move to
his left before sliding the puck home for his 2nd tally of the season and a 4th
straight victory for his club.
If the Sharks game plan was to let
Minnesota punch themselves out early, mission accomplished. Minnesota had the
after burners set to full the entire opening 20 minutes. The Sharks held them
off with solid defense, but the offensive opportunities were limited.
Both teams traded penalties in the first 10 minutes of the game, but neither
team would cash in. The Sharks used their opportunity to record their first
shot on goal 9 minutes into the game.
Minnesota held an 8-5 advantage
in shots after 20 minutes.
A Barclay Goodrow tripping penalty 4:05
into the 2nd period setup the game's first score of the night. Matt Boldy
one-timed a Mats Zuccarello pass from the bottom of the right circle.
Zuccarello sent a long diagonal pass from the bottom of the left circle,
allowing Boldy to lift a shot that beat Yaroslav Askarov over the left
shoulder.
Alexander Wennberg intercepted an errant Yakov Trenin pass
in the high slot at the 9 minute mark, but the Shark centerman's shot attempt
was smothered by Gustavsson. Minnesota countered with a push on the other end
of the ice that ended with a shot clanking off the right post.
San Jose went on the power play after Joel Eriksson
Ek interfered with Macklin Celebrini. Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky was
forced to throw his 2nd power play unit out on the ice first, which did nothing
with the opportunity.
John Klingberg had to haul down Boldy after a
puck skipped past him on the penalty box side boards to put the Wild back on
the power play 2 seconds after Ericksson Ek's penalty expired.
The
Sharks top line was caught in the long end late in the period, skating a shift
that exceeded 2 minutes. Minnesota pinned the Sharks in their own end, capped
by a nice chance for Trenin who redirected a shot that clipped the left post.
Alexander Wennberg was sent off for slashing at 17:09 to put the Wild
on the power play for the 4th time.
Warsofsky tried to mix things up
early in the 3rd period to try and ignite something. Collin Graf was moved on
to the top line, joining Celebrini and Will Smith. with Tyler Toffoli was moved
to the 2nd line with Wennberg and Philipp Kurashev.
San Jose finally
found a crack when David Jiricek was sent off for slashing 11:08 into the
frame. The Sharks top power play unit then went to work with Will Smith
depositing the back end of a tic-tac-toe sequence that started with Tyler
Toffoli hitting Celebrini on the left side. Celebrini saw Smith lurking on the
right side, setting him up with the immediate feed. Smith pushed the puck past
Gustavsson for his 7th of the year.
