The Sharks youngsters put on a display at the
world's most famous arena on Thursday night and in doing so, snapped their
6-game losing streak and potted their first victory of the season. San Jose
knocked off the host New York Rangers 6-5 in a wild overtime tilt that saw four
lead changes. Macklin Celebrini recorded his 2nd career hat trick to go along
with a 5 point night, and Will Smith bagged the second of his 2 goals with the
game winner in overtime.
All the big contributions came from the
Sharks young players, including William Eklund (3 assists), Adam Gaudette (1
goal), and Collin Graf & Michael Misa (1 assist each). The young core
accounted for 5 goals and 9 assists in the game.
The script called for
the topsy-turvy game to end in another heartbreaking loss, but the Sharks
stayed resilient in a venue that's tough to compete in. New York was 5-0-1
versus San Jose at the Garden over the last 6 seasons.
A good start
was the order of the day for San Jose and they complied with a hop in their
step. San Jose controlled the puck for a good chunk of the opening 6 minutes,
out-shooting New York 6-0. Adam Gaudette staked the Sharks to the early lead
just 1:58 into the game after the Sharks used a strong fore-check to keep the
puck pinned deep into the Rangers zone. Collin Graf worked the puck behind the
New York net then slipped a pass out to the slot where Gaudette pushed a shot
past Igor Shesterkin for his 3rd goal of the year.
Matt Rempe tried to
kick start his team by engaging with Ryan Reaves for a heavyweight under card
bout that turned into an entertaining fight. Reaves landed a few strong rights
and smiled on his way to the box knowing he provided energy for his own bench.
Rempe's objective was flipped upside down when Adam Fox was called for
hooking 16 seconds later. Macklin Celebrini scored the first of his three goals
6 seconds into the power play. After wining the draw, the young forward floated
to the front of the net while Dmitry Orlov and William Eklund worked the puck
to the right circle. Eklund uncorked a shot that Shesterkin stopped but the
rebound kicked out to Celebrini for a put back chance that hit Matthew
Robertson in the skate and into the net.
Taylor Raddysh halved the
Sharks lead at 14:19 by firing a shot on goal from the blueline. Defenseman
Vincent Desharnais was locked up with his defensive assignment when the puck
clipped him, changing directions on Sharks goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic.
Things looked as if San Jose would carry their 1-goal lead into the
1st intermission, but the youngsters worked a third goal out of Shesterkin with
9 seconds left in the period. After gaining the Rangers zone, Eklund moved the
puck to Will Smith on the outside of the left circle. Celebrini then collected
a Smith feed as he cut through the slot, then threw the puck back across the
grain to beat Shesterkin for his 4th tally of the season.
Ty
Dellandrea was whistled for a lazy holding penalty at 3:56 and the Rangers used
all of 8 seconds to convert the power play into their 2nd goal of the game.
Mika Zibanejad bagged his 3rd of the season with a shot from the bottom of the
left circle to cut San Jose's lead to a single goal once again.
Juuso
Parssinen tied the game at 6:47 after the stars aligned for the Rangers. With
Eklund trying to make a change on the long end of the rink, Alexander Wennberg
coughed up the puck at his own blueline then lost his stick. Parssinen
collected a Connor Sheary pass out of the right corner then drove to the net
while two Shark defenders had their backs to him. Nedeljkovic tried to come out
to poke check Parssinen who reacted with a move to his left before sweeping the
puck into a wide open net.
Matthew Robertson provided a little relief for the
Sharks by taking an interference penalty at 11:51, but San Jose promptly
coughed up a puck and allowed Raddysh to skate up the left wing before firing a
shot past Nedeljkovic for the go-ahead short-handed goal.
Celebrini
weaved a little more of his last minute magic by potting his hat trick goal
with 6 seconds remaining in the period with a roof job from 15 feet out on the
left side. Will Smith setup his teammate with a pas out of the left corner
after the Sharks did a great job to press on the forecheck.
The Sharks
had to kill an early delay of game penalty to start the 3rd period, but the
penalty table turned on New York when Cullye and Raddysh were called for
separate infractions 6 seconds apart.
Will Smith banged home a loose
puck from the doorstep right after the two Ranger penalties expired to put the
Sharks up 5-4. It was Smith's 1st goal of the season, also giving him a 3 point
night.
Raddysh equaled Celebrini with his own hat trick at 11:50 when
he ripped a shot on the fly from the right side that sailed over Nedeljkovic's
left shoulder. The goal retied the game for the 4th time in the contest.
It was who else, Celebrini to Smith for the game winner in OT.
Game Notes: * Defenseman Nick Leddy took a hit from
Will Cuylle early in the 1st period and left the game for repairs. He would not
return.
* Macklin Celebrini exacted a bit of revenge on the Rangers
whose team bus hit the 2nd year-forward's car in San Jose last season.
Celebrini's hat trick was (tongue-in-cheek) retribution for the damage
inflicted on Celebrini's ride.
* William Eklund's 3 assists was a
career high.
* Celebrini became the youngest player to record a hat
trick at Madison Square Garden at 19 years, 132 days.
* The Sharks
have less than 24 to celebrate their 1st win of the season as the team heads to
New Jersey to take on the Devils on Friday night.
