San Jose hits the road for the first of 4
games on Tuesday night with a stop in Elmont, New York to face the New York
Islanders at UBS Arena. The Isles have struggled at home, winning 1 of 3 games
there this season, but they withstood a flurry of shots from the Sharks in the
opening period, then held off San Jose in the last 90 seconds to drop the
Sharks to a 6th consecutive loss to start the with a 4-3 win.
The
Sharks played better but the all too common lapses when it matters bit them to
the tune of 4 goals. 1st overall draft pick Matthew Schaefer recorded the game
winning goal and added an assist to lead the Islanders to their 3rd victory of
the season.
San Jose drops to 0-4-2 to open the season, and once again
find themselves scratching their heads trying to figure out how to win hockey
games.
The hard luck Sharks opened the game with guns blazing,
peppering Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin with 8 shots in the first 7 minutes
of the game. They would see some momentary success, before the luck ran out.
The Sharks turned the tables on a questionable Mario Ferraro
interference penalty at 7:55 into a 1-0 lead when Collin Graf converted on an
Islanders turnover. Ty Dellandrea intercepted a puck at his own blueline then
raced up ice before feeding Graf who bagged his 1st of the year.
A
crack in the glass adjacent to the Islanders bench forced a delay in the game
which seemed to steal all of the Sharks momentum.
New York converted
on the power play a minute later when Bo Horvat one-timed a Matthew Barzal feed
past Yaroslav Askarov from the bottom of the right circle. Horvat found a crack
in Askarov's setup by lifting the shot over the young Russian netminder's left
shoulder.
Defenseman Sam Dickinson showed off his inexperience when he
tried to feed a teammate the puck from behind his own net. The rookie flipped
it out to the front of the net where Casey Cizikas swooped in an put a quick
shot past Askarov for the 2-1 lead.
The Sharks tied the game at 14:16
when Dickinson leaped to glove a clearing attempt, then sent a pass to Graf.
The Sharks forward moved the puck to Michael Misa near the right circle who saw
Adam Gaudetted on the off wing. Misa put a perfect pass through the slot,
hitting Gaudette on the tape for the easy deposit.
Dickinson's night
went from bad to worse, when he was called for holding with 1:47 left in the
period. The Islanders converted on the ensuing power play to go 2-for-2 on the
man advantage, albeit with a bit of controversy.
With the puck lost a
sea of skates, referees Pierre Lambert and Peter MacDougall lost site of it.
The Islanders started to celebrate, but neither Lambert and MacDougall called
it a goal. They would converse for a second, then announce that it was a goal.
After conferring with Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky, the officials then went
to video review which showed that Emil Heineman kicked at the puck as it sat
perched against Askarov's right pad and the left post before the kick occurred.
It was then ruled a goal after the review.
New York picked up where
they left off to start the 2nd period. Schaefer pinched on a zone entry then
pounced on a rebound for a put back chance after former Sharks Anthony Duclair
bounced a shot attempt of Askarov. The goal made it a 4-2 deficit for a Sharks
team that has not been great at overcoming deficits.
San Jose missed on a chance to claw back when
Jonathan Druin was called for holding the stick at 9:24. The Sharks would do
nothing to generate any challenge to Sorokin with the man advantage. Tyler
Toffoli then proceeded to hit a post and a crossbar after the penalty expired,
preceding a tripping penalty to Vincent Desharnais.
Macklin Celebrini
cut the Islanders lead to a single goal 10:16 into the 3rd period by lifting a
shot top shelf from the slot after Dmitry Orlov set him up with a pass from the
left wing boards.
Will Smith drew a tripping penalty on Scott Mayfield
30 seconds later to put the Sharks on their 3rd power play of the night. As was
the case on their prior chances, San Jose just couldn't solve Sorokin.
A turnover right after Mayfield's penalty expired turned into a breakaway
chance for Simon Holmstrom, but Askarov shut the door with his right pad.
Warsofsky pulled Askarov with 1:32 left in regulation, setting up a
handful of quality looks at the Islanders net, but Sorokin denied them. Alex
Wennberg had a great look that hit Sorokin up high. Celebrini had a pair of
chances, but they were not to be.
