The Sharks wrapped up their 3-game road trip
on Friday night with a game less than 24 hours after losing to the Chicago
Blackhawks. While it may be hard to understand how players can have tired legs
5 games into the new season, but the Sharks played like they had tired legs
tied together. The host Winnipeg Jets scored 4 times on the power play and
pummeled the Sharks 8-3 at Canada Life Centre in the most lopsided contest of
the season.
After killing the first 12 penalties they faced this
season, the Sharks surrendered 6 power play goals in the span of a day. The
Jets scored at will with the man advantage and even strength. Winnipeg
converted just 1:59 into the contest and kept playing to the final horn.
Vladislav Nemstnikov recorded his 4th point of the night with a goal with 32
seconds left in the game.
Winnipeg never let up. The Sharks never
showed up.
After Josh Morrissey recorded his 1st goal of the season to
open the game's scoring, Nikolaj Ehlers tacked on his 1st of the year 7 minutes
later on the power play. Jan Rutta, one of 6 Sharks to take a penalty setup
Ehlers goal with a high sticking penalty at 8:24.
Tyler Toffoli
continued his hot hand by scoring his 4th goal of the season at 11:43 to cut
the Jets lead to a single goal. That would be as close as the Sharks would get.
Toffoli redirected a Jake Walman shot while the Sharks enjoyed one of their 2
power play chances on the night.
Ehlers added his 2nd goal less than 2
minutes later after the Jets picked Mikael Granlund's pocket at the Winnipeg
blueline. Cole Perfetti moved the puck up the left side before sending it
across the ice to Ehlers on the right side for a sweeping shot that beat
goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood.
Neal Pionk converted on the power play
with 72 seconds remaining in the period to essentially put the game out of
reach before the 1st intermission.
Winnipeg picked up right where they
left off to start the 2nd period when Kyle Connor scored 1:46 into the middle
period. Connor took a drop pass from Pionk between the circles before snapping
a shot that beat Blackwood over the right shoulder.
The goal would end
Blackwood's night, allowing 5 goals on 18 shots.
Luke Kunin scored his
1st goal of the season at 10:28 scoring from between the circles himself. Carl
Grundstrom fed Kunin the puck from the right dot, allowing his linemate to beat
Connor Hellebucyk between the pads.
The Sharks inability to stay out of the box added to
their misery. Cole Perfetti socred a pair of power play goals, bookending
Fabian Zetterlund's 3rd of the season.
Zetterlund sent a wrist shot
past Hellebuyck after Toffoli setup his linemate on a 2-on-1 chance fro the
left side. Toffoli has recorded his 2nd assist of the season on the play,
adding to his team leading 6 points.
After Perfetti scored his 2nd
goal of the period at 12:55, the scoreboard operator gave the Winnipeg goal
button a momentary break. Winnipeg would go 6 plus minutes before Nemstnikov
capped the game's scoring in the final 30 seconds of the contest.
The
Sharks will limp home to face Colorado on Sunday.
Game
Notes: * The Sharks held William Eklund out of the lineup for
precautionary reasons. Eklund sustained an undisclosed injury Dallas.
* Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky elected to scratch Will Smith for the first
time this season. Warsofsky emphasized that the move was not punitive, but
rather part of Smith's development plan. The rookie has struggled in his first
4 NHL games thus far this season.
* Three Jets had 4-point nights in
the contest. Neal Pionk, Cole Perfetti and Vladislav Nemstnikov each achieved
the feet for the first time in their respective careers.
* Not a
coincidence that the Sharks are giving up bushels of power play goals, because
they're taking bushels of penalties. San Jose surrendered 6 power goals on 14
power plays over their last two games.
* Winnipeg out-shot San Jose
36-22. Add 16 missed shots by the Jets and 21 blocked shots by San Jose and you
have a lot of rubber headed in the direction of Sharks goaltending. The game
marked the first time a starting goaltender did not finish the game for San
Jose.
