The Sharks hit the road for the first time
this season, starting with a stop in Dallas on Tuesday night. Having won their
fist three games to start the season, Dallas looked to extend their winning
ways against a team still learning how to compete in the NHL. San Jose played a
controlled game, extending a 2-2 tie to overtime and eventually a shootout
before dropping the game in the skills competition.
The difference
between this loss and the bushel of disappointment last season, was that the
Sharks played competitive hockey that setup a chance to take two points. They
are still steps away from being truly competitive, but this wasn't a mugging by
a team that many consider a Stanley Cup contender in the Stars.
Defensive accountability seems to be the order of the day, and San Jose looks
so close to cracking the win column. They just allowed a much stronger team to
counter a pair of Sharks goals right away. The stronger team puts the clamps on
their opponent.
The Sharks penalty killers were forced to flex their
skills midway through the first period when an errant Barclay Goodrow stick
caught Logan Stankoven up high drawing a 4-minute double minor. Those killers
kept things simple and erased the lengthy Stars advantage with solid
positioning and a matter of fact approach to addressing the situation.
Mackenzie Blackwood play was night and day from his opening night loss to the
St Louis Blues. Blackwood was perfect in the opening period, stopping all 11
shots he faced. Jake Oettinger was similarly sharp, stopping all 9 Shark shots
that he faced in the opening 20 minutes.
Tyler Toffoli helped San Jose
snap a Dallas franchise streak of leading or playing tied t to start a season.
Dallas had gone 10 straight periods without trailing an opponent before Toffoli
collected the puck and skating on the left side of a 2-on-1 break. The Sharks
centerman than snapped a 25-foot shot to beat Oettinger for his 2nd goal of the
season.
The goal also snapped a 5-period scoreless streak for San
Jose.
Blackwood denied Esa Lindell who had a solid look from 15 feet
out at the 11 minute mark. The Sharks goaltender was able to get his blocker on
the chest high shot.
The Sharks netminder wouldn't have a rabbit to
pull out of his hat a minute later when Matt Duchene buried a Mason Marchment
feed. Duchene cut towards the net just outside the left post before tapping
home Marchment's diagonal feed from the right wing boards.
San Jose reclaimed the lead at 15:12 when former
Stars forward Ty Dellandrea cleaned up on a breakaway chance by Nico Sturm.
Sturm blew past Oettinger after putting a shot on goal from in tight, but the
Stars netminder lost sight of the puck. Dellandrea swooped in and chipped home
the rebound for his 1st goal as a Shark.
Dallas answered 2 minutes
later when Roope Hintz fired a shot past Blackwood from the high slot after
taking a lateral pass from Jason Robertson.
The Sharks were handed a
grand opportunity to open the 3rd period when Nils Lundkvist took a tripping
penalty 58 seconds into the period, then Colin Blackwell was sent off for
slashing 24 seconds later.
San Jose spent the majority of the 2-man
advantage trying to gain the Stars zone and control the puck once they were
able to get it in the offensive third of the ice. That amounted to nothing to
keep the game square at 2-2.
Luke Kunin missed on a golden chance at
9:15 when a loose puck found it's way to him in the slot. The Sharks forward
tried to snap a shot to the left of Oettinger but put the puck wide of the left
post.
Blackwood stoned Evgeni Dadonov on a breakaway chance with 6:50
to play. Dadonov walked in on net before snapping a shot from 18 feet, but
Blackwood gloved the scoring chance.
Both teams played a conservative
overtime. Klim Kostin was whistled for a questionable interference penalty with
43.3 seconds left in overtime, but the Sharks stayed perfect on the penalty
kill, denying all four chances in the contest.
In the shootout the
Stars buried a pair of chances when Jason Robertson and Wyatt Johnston burying
shots. Will Smith missed on his first NHL shootout attempt, but Mikael Granlund
extended things to the 3rd round with a goal.
