Vaclav Varada - Buffalo
Sabres Varada was suspended after his involvement in a play that sent
Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jose Theodore to the lockerroom with a concussion
last week. Theodore tried playing a loose puck when Varada barreled into him
with a knee to the head.
Theodore's teammate, Doug Gilmore,
immediately went after Varada and called it "one of the worst cheap shots" he'd
ever seen. Theodore was the second Montreal goalie to go out with an injury.
Veteran Jeff Hackett injured his shoulder last Saturday -- also against
Buffalo.
Mathieu Garon replaced Theodore and the Canadiens called up
18-year-old goaltender Olivier Michaud from the Quebec League's Shawinigan
Cataractes on Saturday. Montreal also called up center Mike Ribeiro from Quebec
of the AHL.
Both Varada and Gilmour were suspended by the league for
one game.
