3rd period dooms
Sharks Vancouver scores 4 goals in the final frame
to sink Sharks
The writing is on the wall. This Sharks roster
doesn't have it and their 3rd period performance against the visiting Vancouver
Canucks proved it. The Sharks blew a 2-1 3rd period lead, allowing the Canucks
to score four times in the final frame to blow out San Jose 5-2 at SAP Center.
After beating a cupcake opponent in Anaheim on Monday night, the Sharks showed
that they don't have any answers for quality teams. A playoff run is ridiculous
notion given for San Jose given the absence of any consistent finish.
The loss was magnified by yet another injury to the Sharks, who are already
without captain Logan Couture.
The Sharks jumped out to the early 1-0
lead 4:15 into the contest when All Star Tomas Hertl swept home a rebound from
the right dot after Tomas Meier bounced a shot off goaltender Jakob Markstrom
from the left side. The goal was Hertl's 16th of the season.
Defenseman Quinn Hughes tied the game at 11:08, when he unloaded on a shot from
the blueline. Sharks goaltender Martin Jones was partially screened by Brent
Burns, but he appeared to pick up the puck, waving at it as it zipped past him
to the top right corner.
Meier would get hurt later in the period when
it appeared that he was pinned to the boards by Hughes. Hertl's right knee
looked to absorb the majority of the force. The sharks forward tried to test
the leg after being tended by the training staff, but he called it a night
after deciding the leg wasn't ready to continue.
San Jose reclaimed
the lead 5:57 into the 2nd period, when Brent Burns sent a blast from the right
point that appeared to hit defenseman Tyler Myers in the shin pad and into the
Canucks goal. Myers was trying to move Kevin Labanc from the front of the goal
when Burns shot deflected off him.
Markstrom made the save of the
night with 7:50 remaining in the period. The Canucks goaltender was on his back
when he waved his right leg toward the rafters, stopping a would be goal off a
Labanc shot from the bottom of the right circle.
San Jose was whistled
for a Timo Meier holding penalty late in the period, but San Jose survived the
period. The Canucks carried over 1:42 of power play time, but could not cash
in.
Myers would tie the game at 2:36, when his long shot from the
blueline eluded Jones. There were players in the vicinity, but it looked like
the sharks goaltender had a good look at the shot. The glove save attempt was
late to get to the spot that would have denied Vancouver.
Marc-Edouard
Vlasic complicated things for San Jose when he cut Oscar Fantenberg with a high
stick, which drew a double minor and four minutes of power play time for the
Canucks.
The Canucks cashed in when Virtanen converted late in the
power play to give the Canucks their first lead of the game.
San Jose tried to counter on the next faceoff, but
Markstrom denied Meier. Vancouver pushed the puck down the ice, before Brandon
Sutter jammed a loose puck over the goal line to make it a 4-2 Canucks lead.
Tanner Pearson added an empty net goal to cap the scoring.
Game Notes:
* Brent Burns goal was his 499th as a Shark.
* The Canucks did not escape the game without suffering their own
injury. Tyler Motte left late in the 2nd period after Erik Karlsson rode him
into the boards. Motte appeared to injure his right shoulder.
* The
loss was the third time San Jose has lost this season after starting the 3rd
period with a lead. It was the first regulation loss with a 3rd period lead.
* Joe Thornton earned his 1,498th career point with the assist on the
Brent Burns goal.
* Jakob Markstrom was credited with 38 saves in the
game.
