Sharks get toothy on Los Tiburones Night
San Jose avenges shutout loss to Islanders
10/20/18 - By Mike Lee -

San Jose capped off their short 2-game home stand by exacting some revenge on the New York Islanders 4-1 at SAP Center on Saturday. The Islanders beat San Jose 4-0 in Brooklyn on the Sharks recent 5-game road trip. The Sharks were a different team this time around, beating the Islanders on the scoreboard as well as with their fists in a spirited affair.

The Sharks dominated the opening period, out-shooting New York 11-7, but the stats don't tell the tale. San Jose controlled the puck for much of the period, rarely allowing the Islanders to encroach on the Sharks zone with the puck in their possession.

Timo Meier staked San Jose to a 1-0 lead 7:59 into the contest when he gathered a Logan Couture feed while parked outside the right post, before lifting a pair of shots on Islanders goaltender Robin Lehner. The first shot was denied, but Meier squeezed his second chance between the left leg pad and Lehner's glove hand for his 4th goal of the season.

San Jose had a power play chance late in the period after Anders Lee was called for interference on Justin Braun. The Sharks power play misfired on the chance, and the wasted opportunity looked even worse when Brock Nelson slipped a shot past Martin Jones with 32.4 seconds left in the period.

It was a terrible end to a stellar period by San Jose.

Antti Suomela has been hunting his first NHL goal all season, and just missed on a chance early in the 2nd period. The Finnish rookie intercepted a centering pass in the Islanders zone before charging the New York goal. Suomela tried slipping a shot around Lehner on the left side, but the goaltender got a stick on the puck, turning it aside. Suomela continued to pursue the puck and flipped a pass back to the front of the net where linemate Joonas Donskoi tapped home a touch shot for his 3rd tally of the season.

The Sharks finally got a goal from a defenseman, when Brent Burns turned into Bobby Orr 13:50 into the period. The burly blueliner attacked the net from the right boards after shedding Jordan Eberle, crashing to the top of the crease before lifting a backhand shot to make it a 3-1 game.

Logan Couture added his 5th goal of the season 4:32 into the 3rd period to put the game out of reach. Tomas Hertl skated the puck out front from behind the Islanders net and tried to whip a shot on goal, but Lehner made a kick save to deny the sharks forward. Counture was parked on the off post, and stabbed at the rebound, lifting it over the goaltender's right leg pad.

With the game obviously leaning in the Sharks favor, the Islanders got testy and elected to take liberties with the Sharks. Cal Clutterbuck, Casey Cizikas and Brent Burns all earned early showers with 10 minute misconducts.

Evander Kane and Anders Lee squared off with under 3 minutes to play after tempers boiled over. The two teams racked up 82 minutes in penalties on 19 separate infractions.

Game Notes:

* The Sharks 3rd line was a force to be reckoned with on Saturday night. MArcus Sorensen, Joonas Donskoi and rookie Antti Suomela had the Islanders on their heels all night. The three were responsible for a goal and two assists. Suomela added 5 shots on goal.

* Evander Kane recorded five separate penalties, accumulating 13 minutes in infractions. Brent Burns added 12 minutes.

* Logan Couture was 10 for 11 on draws for a crazy 91% faceoff win rate.

* Several encounters resulted in punches, but referees Jean Hebert and Brad Meier only issued four fighting majors.

* San Jose out-shot the Islanders 41-25. The Sharks recorded 15 shots in each of the 2nd and 3rd period.
