Gritty comeback leads to 4-2 in
South Florida Sharks win second straight
The Sharks dug deep on the road and fought back
from a 2-0 deficit to take a 4-2 decision over the Florida Panthers in Sunrise
on Thursday night. Four different skaters tallied goals for San Jose, including
Tommy Wingel's game winner 9 minutes into the 3rd period. Martin Jones overcame
a shaky 3 minute span in the 1st period to finish the evening with a 22 save
night to earn his 7th win of the season.
That rough stretch saw former
Sharks defenseman Jason Demers push a pair of shots past him, staking the
Panthers to the early 2-0 lead. The blueliner was the beneficiary of a
deflection on his 1st goal after he gathered the puck along the right wing
boards before shooting from the dot. Wingels tried to get his stick in front of
Demers' shot, but end up tipping over Jones right shoulder.
Demers
pinched on a play after Jaromir Jagr fired a shot on net from the right side
2:17 later. The defenseman broke for the left post after Jagr's shot hit
Aleksander Barkov and deflected right to Demers for the easy deposit. The
Panthers were in the position to generate the scoring chance after Joel Ward
coughed up the puck at the Florida blueline.
San Jose salvaged
something out of the period with 3:42 remaining after he scooped up a loose
puck on the left side then raced in on net, bull-dogging a shot past former
Sharks renatl goaltender James Reimer. Demers was draped all over Burns, but
the burly defenseman looked like a power forward as he out muscled the Panther
on his way to the net.
Joe Pavelski kicked things into gear 1:53 into
the 2nd period, scoring his 5th goal of the season after the Panthers turned
the puck over in their own zone. Ward pressed matters along the left wing
boards as defenseman Alex Petrovic made a half-hearted stab at the puck in an
attempt, intercepting it and quickly dropping a pass to Pavelski. The Sharks
captain cut through the left circle, snapping a shot over Reimer's left
shoulder.
The defense put the clamps on the Panthers the rest of the
night, limiting to them to 13 shots over the final 40 minutes of play. Jones
only saw 6 shots in the middle frame and handled them with ease.
Wingels worked his magic with 11:07 to play, taking a
Chris Tierney pass out of the right corner then deeking Reimer with a move to
the net as he cut across the goal mouth. Reimer committed to that move as
Wingels pulled the puck back and slipped it around the goaltender's right skate
for his 2nd goal of the season.
The Panthers had no answers for the
Sharks, who took away space, especially in the neutral zone throughout the
final 10 minutes of play.
Mired in a min-slump Logan Couture had a bit
of a respite from his doldrums by scoring an empty net goal late to seal the
game for San Jose.
Game Notes:
* The Sharks control of
the 2nd and 3rd periods can be attributed to control they mastered in the
faceoff circle. San Jose won 33 of 57 draws (57%). Joe Thornton won 9-of-10 to
lead the Sharks.
* Couture and Marc-Edouard Vlasic led the Sharks with
4 shots each. Four Panthers logged 3 shots each.
* Justin Braun led
all Sharks skaters in ice time, with 22:14 on 25 shifts. Braun earned those
minutes with on of his better defensive showings of the season. Braun was a +1,
with 2 shots, 3 hits and 3 blocked shots.
