Sharks spank Habs
6-2 Pavelski's big night leads San Jose
Once the hottest thing going in the Eastern
Conference, the Montreal Canadiens have fallen on hard times of late. Their
lone visit to San Jose didn't do much to turn their season around. The Sharks
unloaded on the Canadiens, scoring 6 goals in a 6-2 whitewashing at SAP Center.
Joe Pavelski scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lead San Jose. Ten
different players recorded points for the Sharks who won their 2nd game in a
row.
San Jose wasted little time piling on Canadiens goaltender Mike
Condon. Joe Thornton scored his 15th goal of the season 3:11 into the game,
tapping home a redirected puck from Pavelski. Justin Brain whipped a puck from
the right point, hitting Pavelski who was parked near the right dot. Pavelski
changed the angle of the puck, putting it right on Thornton's tape for the easy
deposit.
Brendan Gallagher tied the game 2 minutes later, throwing a
puck to the front of the net from the right corner. Goaltender Martin Jones
lost the puck in his skates, allowing it to deflect into his own net for the
1-1 tie.
Pavelski untied the game with 4 minutes left in the period by
one timing a Thornton feed from the left wing boards. Pavelski drove down the
right side of the slot before receiving the 30-foot pass and roofing a shot
over Condon's right shoulder for his 28th goal of the season.
Brent
Burns made it a 3-1 game at 3:11 of the 2nd period, snapping a shot past Condon
as he streaked up the right side. Once again Thornton setup the goal with a
pass from the neutral zone.
Former Shark Torrey Mitchell finally
figured out how to put a puck in an opposing net at SAP Center, when he scored
his 7th goal of the season at 12:32 of the period. Mitchell hacked at a Paul
Byron pass from the left side. Mitchell's shot knuckled on Jones, looping over
his glove for the change of pace goal.
San Jose put the game out of
reach with a trio of goals in the 3rd period.
Melker Karlsson made it a 4-2 game 2:14 into the
period after Chriy Tierney feathered a pass out of the left corner as the Swede
drove to the net. Karlsson gathered Tierney's pass and lifed a puck past Condon
as he cut across the top of the crease from left to right.
Nick
Spaling bagged his 2nd goal in teal a minute later, punching home a rebound
from the right side after Logan Coutner bounced a long shot off Condon. Spaling
was heading to the net when the puck landed right in front of him. He had to
lift the puck around the left side of Condon as he broke to the right.
Pavelski capped the scoring with 5:10 to play, one timing a Tierney feed from
the slot. Tierney retrieved a deflected shot behind the net and saw Pavelski
sliding toward the net. The pass floated out to Pavelski for the quick put-back
and a 6-2 lead.
