Cons: Sharks are in meltdown
form State of the Sharks

After starting out the season 4-0, things are
heading south for our San Jose Sharks very fast.
As of this writing,
the team now stands at 6-6. Everything seems to be going wrong: Logan Couture
is injured and gone for an extended period time; the Sharks give up the first
goal within minutes of each opening faceoff, Martin Jones' promising start as
the Sharks' go-to guy in goal has deteriorated into mediocrity or worse. (If
there's a hot goaltender in the game, he's usually not wearing a Sharks
uniform.).
Oh, and let's not forget - thousands upon thousands of
empty seats and a less-crowded concourse are becoming standard fare at SAP
Center, which once boasted years of consecutive sellouts. Obviously, lots of
Sharks fans simply had enough after the 2014 playoff debacle (Do I really need
to state the specifics of that one again? Didn't think so.).
So where
to now? All we can hope for is that the past few weeks are just a temporary
glitch and that the team will get its act together. But that is going to have
to happen quickly. Getting thoroughly outplayed at home by the 2-10 Columbus
Blue Jackets is not the stuff that gives us fans lots of confidence. Panic
attacks, yes. Confidence? Uh, no.
If the season continues on its downward trajectory and
the Sharks miss the playoffs for a second consecutive season, heads are going
to have to roll. General manager Doug Wilson, who gave up what could be a
lottery draft pick for the now-faltering Jones, can't feel much job security
these days. That's what happens when the tickets don't sell, the fans lose
interest and the team keeps losing, especially at home.
I'd like to
end this bit with a light-at-the-end-the-tunnel prediction. But right now, I
can't bring myself to do that. The Sharks, who started this mess with the 2014
playoffs and continued with last season's playoff miss, are the only ones who
can fix it.
