Sharks drop first preseason
game Canucks win on odd overtime goal
The Sharks kicked off their pre-season game
schedule on Monday night by participating in the Kraft Hockeyville Game held at
the Q Center in Victoria, British Columbia. The Sharks rolled out a roster of
primarily 3rd and 4th line players, combined with a pool of prospects, in a low
scoring affair in a contest intended to provide coaches with a chance to
evaluate bubble players in an NHL environment. The Sharks would drop the game
1-0 in overtime, surrendering a 4-on-3 goal in the extra session.
The
game reached the extra period after San Jose failed to convert on four power
play chances in regulation and a myriad of scoring chances against Canucks
goaltenders.
Timo Meier and Nikolay Goldobin gave a preview of what
could be for the Sharks when the two prospects teamed up for a nice scoring
chance early. Meier took a Goldobin feed on the left side and snapped a shot
that tested Canucks goaltender Jacob Markstrom.
Lukas Sbisa hooked
Tomas Hertl early in the 1st period to put the Sharks on the power play. All
the Sharks would have to show for the chance is a stinger to Hertl's ankle
after a shot hit the forward in the side of the leg.
Troy Grosenick
had a relatively quiet evening with the exception of a Brendan Gaunce break on
net that ended with a waving glove save by the Sharks goaltender.
Aaron Dell played the second half of the game in net for San Jose and came up
big on a Jannick Hansen breakaway in the 3rd period. Dell would follow that up
with another big save seconds later after the Canucks kept the puck in the
Sharks zone.
Dylan Sadowy missed on a backhand chance from the top of
the net with 13 minutes left in regulation but second Canucks goaltender
Richard Bachman gloved the chance to keep the game scoreless.
An Adam Cracknell holding penalty gave the Sharks
their 4th power play with 6 minutes to play, but the Sharks couldn't solve
Bachman. Goldobin had a chance from the left side, but held on to the puck a
split second too long, allowing the Canucks to collapse on the scoring chance.
Both teams skated on 3-on-3 for the first time this season since the
league imposed the new overtime format. It would not turn out to be kind to the
Sharks, who made things more complicated for themselves.
Yannick
Hansen drew a penalty on Nikolay Goldobin during the 3-on-3, which allowed the
Canucks to add a player to the ice before a whistle halted play. Cracknell took
a feed at the slot and floated down the slot before snapping a shot just inside
the left post for the game winner.
