Pavelski's hattie gets Sharks
back on track Third trifecta of the season for
centerman
Fresh off their lackluster performance in Calgary
on Monday night, the Sharks salvaged the back end their Alberta swing on
Tuesday night with a 5-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place. Joe
Pavelski scored three goals, to record his 3rd hat-trick of the season.
Pavelski continued to set career highs in goal, bagging numbers 35, 36, and 37
on the season. San Jose avenged a 3-0 shutout loss to the Oilers on January
29th.
* The Pavelski show helped San Jose overcome an early 1-0
deficit after David Perron put the Oilers up 1-0 just 4:11 into the game.
Perron took a drop pass from Taylor Hall inside the Sharks blueline then raced
around Tyler Kennedy before lifting a shot past Antti Niemi. The goal was
Perron's 26th of the season.
* Skating 24 hours after their tough
shootout loss to Calgary, Pavelski and the Sharks kicked things into gear in
the 2nd period. Ryan Smyth setup things by taking a holding penalty at 5:51 of
the period to put the Sharks on the power play. The special teams came to life,
scoring the first of three goals on the man advantage. Patrick Marleau fired a
shot on Oilers goaltender Ben Scrivens from the slot. Scrivens made the stop on
Marleau, but the rebound dribbled over to Pavelski for the easy put back goal.
* Marleau got in on the act 4 minutes later after Andrew Ference was
sent off for holding James Sheppard. Pavelski gathered up a Brent Burns shot on
the left side, then sent a pass to Marleau through the high slot. Marleau
rifled the one time chance past Scrivens fort his 31st goal of the season.
* Adam Burish appeared to take a shot off his left forearm as he tried
blocking a shot late in the 2nd period. The Sharks forward skated straight to
the locker room. A screen capture form the television broadcast appeared to
show a significant laceration on one of Burish's fingers.
* Edmonton
tried to regroup and stepped up the pressure late in the period, but the Sharks
were the ones to convert when recently rejuvenated forward Martin Havlat snuck
a long shot just past Scrivens out stretched blocker from the left wing. The
goal came with just 30.3 seconds left in the period, essentially breaking the
Oilers back.
* Hall was sent off for holding 31 seconds into the final
period, after he was forced to hogtie Matt Nieto. Pavelski bagged his 2nd of
the game on the ensuing power play, taking a Dan Boyule pass while parked in
front of the net and spinning 180 degrees before lifting the puck over
Scrivens.
* Pavelski capped his goal barrage with a one-time
chance from between the circles that caught top shelf, after Joe Thornton set
him up with a pass from the end boards. The Edmonton crowd sprinkled the ice
with a few hats in celebration of Pavelski's feat. It was a step up from the
Oilers jerseys that were thrown on the ice by a few of the Edmonton faithful
following a tough loss last week.
* Hall added his 25th goal of the
season with 5:04 left in regulation to cut the Sharks lead to three goals. It
was as close as the Oilers would come as they fell for the 39th time in
regulation this season.
* Logan Couture was scratched a day after
suffering an undisclosed injury after blocking a shot in Calgary.
*
The Oilers blocked 17 shots in addition to the 34 shots that San Jose threw at
Scrivens.
* Perron led all skaters with 6 shots on goal. Pavelski and
Burns led San Jose with 4 apiece.
