Doormat trips
Sharks Luongo stops 52 shots in 3-2 Panthers
win
The Sharks entered Tuesday night's game at SAP
Center on a roll. They had won 6 straight games, and were taking a team with
the 3rd worst record in the NHL in the Florida Panthers. They were poised to
grab the Pacific Division lead after the Anaheim Ducks had dropped a 3-2
decision to the Washington Capitals earlier in the evening. That was all
meaningless, as the Sharks looked past the doormat Panthers and rolled over,
dropping a 3-2 decision on home ice.
* San Jose's power play failures
reared their ugly head once again. The Sharks scored a 2nd period power play
goal , but entering the 3rd period, San Jose had 4 power play chances including
51 seconds of 5-on-3 time that went wasted. Trailing by two goals in that 3rd
period, the power play failures essentially killed half the period.
*
The Sharks put 29 shots on Roberto Luongo in that 3rd period, and 54 shots
overall, but stat just proved that they were extremely capable of putting the
puck into the center of a big Italian target. Unfortunately the game doesn't
reward for putting pucks on big Italian targets.
* Patrick Marleau
bounced a shot off the crossbar while the Sharks were on a power play early in
the 2nd period following a Jimmy Hayes. Martin Havlat wouldn't miss moments
later, slipping a shot past Roberto Luongo for his 8th of the season.
* Hayes almost made amends on a scoring chance on the next shift, but Antti
Niemi got a blocker on the shot. San Jose followed that up with an Adam Burish
chance that ended with Luongo gloving the puck and Burish with a face full of
Ed Jovanovski's glove.
* The Sharks let down their guard, blinked, and
just like that they trailed. Brandon Pirri fired a shot on Niemi from the slot
that hit the Sharks goaltender then floated up and over his right shoulder.
Defenseman Scott Hannan tried to glove the puck as it fluttered toward the goal
line, but he ended up pushing it into the Sharks goal to tie things up.
* Quinton Howden put the Panthers up 2-1 just 17 seconds after Pirri's
goal, jamming home a puck that squirted through Niemi's pads. Pirri pumped a
shot that split the Shark netminder's pads, but Niemi ended up kicking it over
to Howden. Who beat Dan Boyle to the goal.
* With the Sharks trying to
scratch out a goal late in the 2nd period, Scottie Upshall pumped a shot past
Niemi with just 14.2 ticks left in the frame to stick a dull fork in the Sharks
jugular. San Jose didn't get much help from Niemi who looked fooled on the
shot, overcommitting and allowing it to slide under his right pad.
* Brent Burns teased the sellout crowd with a goal
with 3:03 remaining in regulation, pushing a shot between Luongo's pads after a
wild scrum in front of the Panthers net.
* The only thing the Sharks
did right on Tuesday night was to host Sam Tageson, a teenager who is suffering
from a heart ailment and is in need of a heart transplant. Tageson was signed
by the Sharks to a one-day contract, was allowed to skate through the Sharks
head during player intros and warm up with the team. The Sharks teamed up with
the Make-a-Wish Foundation to make Tageson's day. He burst out in tears when he
was shown on the center-ice jumbotron following the national anthem.
