Couture to have hand
surgery Forward to miss 3 to 4 weeks
The Sharks injury bug continues to wreak havoc on
an already wounded roster. Monday turned out to be as painful as any, as word
circulated that forward Logan Couture will undergo surgery on his hand on
Wednesday and is expected to miss 3 to 4 weeks as a result. Multiple media
outlets reported that an unidentified source confirmed the injury and the
impending surgery.
It's unclear how and when Couture sustained the
injury, but his goal production suffered during an 11-game stretch during
December. He scored his 1st goal in almost a month on December 29th in a 3-1
win over Anaheim. Couture would then go on a 4-game goal scoring streak before
the Blackhawks held him scoreless on Sunday night in Chicago.
He did
score in the shootout in the Sharks 3-2 win in Chicago, and showed no apparent
signs of an injury. Sources indicated that he had been wearing a brace on the
hand for a couple of weeks.
The 24 year-old centerman has 14 goals and
21 assists in 43 games this season.
It's unclear how the injury will
impact Couture's chances of making the Canadian Olympic Team. Hockey Canada is
expected to announce their roster on Tuesday. They could name Couture to the
team, with the option of replacing him should he not be cleared to play
following his surgery.
San Jose has 7 regulars all on the shelf, including 5
that are on injured reserve. Couture joins Tommy Wingels, Tomas Hertl, Scott
Hannan, Raffi Torres and Adam Burish on the IR. Martin Havlat is still nursing
and undisclosed lower body injury, but he has not been assigned to the reserve
list.
Tyler Kennedy is suffering from the flu, and was held back from
travelling with the team because of the tendency for flu to spread among
players, especially those confined to airplanes during road trips.
With Couture's injury, 3 top-6 forwards are on the mend.
Farmhand
Freddie Hamilton was recalled from Worcester on Monday afternoon. Hamilton had
been assigned to Worcester on Sunday.
