Stalock proves to be
human Sharks fold in Carolina
The Carolina Hurricanes had scored 16 goals in the
3rd period all season entering their matchup with the Sharks at PNC Arena in
Raleigh on Friday night. Down 2-1 heading to the final 20 minutes of play, the
Hurricanes erupted for 4 goals to win 5-3 and send San Jose to their 2nd loss
in as many nights. Elias Lindholm had a goal and 2 assists in that 3rd period
to lead Carolina.
* The Hurricanes jumped from 9th place in the
Eastern Conference to 7th with the win. Their 31 points hop-scotched the
Washington Capitals and New York Rangers and now trail Toronto by 2 points.
* The Sharks were 16-0-1 when leading after 2 periods. Carolina
becomes the first team this season to beat San Jose in regulation after the
Sharks took a lead into the 3rd period.
* Alex Stalock made his 4th
start of the season and failed to bring the magic that has made his first full
season in the NHL a memorable one. Stalock allowed 4 goals on 34 shots. The
Hurricanes scored their 5th goal via the empty net variety. Stalock was
cruising, stopping 24 of 25 shots through 2 periods.
* Stalock fell
victim to lively boards and a rookie mistake. The Hurricanes cut into the
Sharks 2-0 lead midway through the 2nd period when Jay Harrison sent a shot in
from the blueline, bouncing it off the end boards, then off Stalock's skate.
* Riley Nash tipped in another Harrison blast from the front of the
net after the Sharks failed to direct traffic away from Stalock.
*
Stalock made things difficult for himself two minutes later when he failed to
cover a Nathan Gerbe shot in the crease. Stalock appeared to cover a static
puck in the crease, but he pushed it to the right post where Jordan Staal
slammed it home to give Carolina their first lead of the night.
*
Justin Braun tied the game at 2-2 with his 3rd goal of the season at 9:35 of
the 3rd, but Carolina grabbed the lead right back less than 5 minutes later.
Lindholm tipped an Andrej Sekera shot past Stalock for his 3rd goal of the
season.
* The Sharks tried to draw the game even, but the fatigue
following back to back games prevented San Jose from generating that extra push
necessary to bag the equalizer. Eric Staal took advantage of an empty net late
to secure the Hurricanes 13th win of the season.
* Tommy Wingels gave
the Sharks the early lead with his 9th goal of the season 7:09 into the game.
Wingels tipped a Justin Braun blast as Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward scrambled
back to his net after chasing a puck along the end boards.
* Things looked peachy for San Jose when Marc-Edouard
Vlasic squeezed a long shot through Ward's pads for the 2-0 Sharks lead at
16:31 of the opening period. Things were all down-hill from there.
*
San Jose retained the 2nd spot in the Western Conference, but the Anaheim Ducks
climbed to a tie in points by beating the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in a shootout.
The Sharks fell 2 points behind Chicago, who has played 2 more games than San
Jose.
* San Jose wraps up the current 4-game road trip in Minnesota on
Sunday night. The Wild site 4 points behind San Jose in 7th place in the West.
