Sharks win at the
Mecca San Jose overcomes penalty kill woes to win in
Toronto
The Sharks made the most of their lone visit to
Toronto on Tuesday night by dispatching the host Maple Leafs 4-2 before a
sellout crowd at Air Canada Center. San Jose used the win to kick-off their
4-game road trip that will take them from Ontario to Minnesota, via Pittsburgh
and Carolina. The win was also the Sharks 9th victory in their last 10 games
and pushes them to within a point of the Chicago Blackhawks for the best record
in the league.
* Seven of the Sharks current rostered players hail
from Ontario, making their way home for the game in what many Canadians
consider hockey's Mecca.
* Mike Brown made his return to Toronto after
playing there for two and a half seasons from 2010 through 2012. He scored five
goals in 112 games for Toronto. Brown scored the Sharks 1st goal of Tuesday
night's game, tipping a Jason Demers shot halfway through the opening period.
Brown was loitering in front of the net, when Demers wristed the puck on net
from the right wing boards.
* Former Canucks left wing Mason Raymond
one Toronto's four minor penalties with just over 6 minutes remaining in the
opening period, tipping up Dan Boyle. The Sharks used the power play to push
their lead to 2-0 when Joe Thornton snapped home the puck from the right side.
Joe Pavelski setup the goal with a pass through the slot from left to right.
Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf was parked in the crease along with Toronto
goaltender James Reimer, but he couldn't cover the right side of the net as
Thornton's shot sailed past him.
* Raymond exacted a bit of revenge
early in the 2nd period after Boyle was sent off for interfering Trevor Smith.
Morgan Reilly sent a long pass up the left wing that Sharks defenseman Brad
Stuart tried to intercept, but Raymond bumped Stuart off the puck before
grabbing it himself and racing on the Sharks goal in a 2-on-1 chance. Raymond
snapped a shot that beat Antti Niemithrough the five-hole.
* Smith
would draw another penalty later in the period when Logan Couture caught him
with a high stick. Toronto tied the game on the ensuing power play when Phil
Kessel deposited a Tyler Bozak feed from the right circle. James Van Riemsdyk
started the scoring sequence by trying to jam home a puck from just outside the
right post. Bozak swooped in through the slot, grabbing the rebound and sending
a pretty pass to Kessel through the slot.
* Brad Stuart scored the
game winning goal with 4 minutes left in the middle period, firing a shot from
the bottom of the left circle that hit Reimer either in the skate or pad and
deflected across the goal line.
* Couture added his 10th goal of the season with an
empty net opportunity late.
* The Maple Leafs out-hit the Sharks
56-19. The disparity was almost a necessity for Toronto who rarely controlled
the puck in the opening period. Jay McClement, Trevor Smith and Carl Gunnarsson
each recorded 6 hits each.
* 15 of the Sharks 18 skaters recorded a +1
during the game. Only Joe Thornton, Tomas Hertl and Brent Burns failed to
record a positive plus / minus.
