Sharks end mini-skid in
Motown Marleau and Couture score in regulation &
shootout
After the Sharks opened the season with their seven
game winning streak, they negated everything by dropping their next seven
games. So after going on another tear and winning another seven in a row, it
was important that they nip any losing streaks in the bud. They did that on
Thursday night in Detroit by coming from behind in the 3rd period and taking a
3-2 shootout victory at Joe Louis Arena.
Losing to Dallas on Sunday
and then turning in one of the poorest showings of the season in Columbus on
Tuesday, San Jose could have easily rolled over in Detroit and succumbed to the
pressures of playing at the Joe.
Logan Couture and Patrick Marleau
both scored in regulation, then added shootout tallies to help propel the
Sharks back into the 4th seed in the Western Conference.
Marleau
scored on the first of four Detroit power plays after teammate Tommy Wingels
was called for boarding on a peculiar penalty. Wingels was chasing his own dump
in and hit Niklas Kronwall against the end boards, but he didn't realize icing
had been called on the play.
Joe Pavelski intercepted an errant Red
Wings pass in the Sharks zone on the ensuing Detroit power play, and raced up
ice, crossing with Marleau en route to the Red Wings net. The forward slid a
pass to his left which Marleau collected and swept past Red Wings goaltender
Jimmy Howard.
Justin Abdelkader tied the game midway through the 2nd
period on a play that Sharks netminder Antti Niemi wished he could replay.
Abdelkader tapped a Johan Franzen feed from outside the right post past Niemi
after Franzen skated behind the Sharks net and slid a soft pass out to the
bottom of the right circle. The low speed shot slid under Niemi's pad for
Abdelkader's 8th goal of the season.
Detroit grabbed a 2-1 lead at
2:29 of the 3rd period when Jakob Kindl one-timed a Henkrik Zetterberg power
play feed after Brent Burns was sent off for holding. Zetterberg drew the
Sharks defense to the left wing boards, before working toward the net, and
sliding a pass through the slot. Kindl was left alone on the weak side,
sweeping home his 4th tally of the season.
Defenseman Brendan Smith
committed his own holding penalty a minute later, allowing the Sharks to draw
even with their own power play goal at the 4:00 mark. Couture bagged his 16th
goal of the season with a sweet backhand shot after Joe Thornton bounced a shot
off Howard's pads. Couture was screening the Red Wings goaltender, and was able
to reel in the deflection with his back to the Detroit goal and lift the puck
with the backside of his stick, catching the top of the Red Wings net.
An uneventful overtime period left the two teams
forced to decide things in the shootout. Detroit started things off with a
Pavel Datsyuk goal, but Niemi buckled down and stopped Damien Brunner and
Gustav Nyquist.
Couture scored on his chance by putting a backhand
chance through Howard's five-hole. Marleau took Couture's queue and went to the
forehand to the same spot, beating the Red Wings with another five-hole shot.
Howard dropped to 0-3-2 lifetime against the Sharks at Joe Louis
Arena.
