Reversal of
Fortune To get the Sharks to win, give up on
them

The other day, I picked up the remote to switch to
the Sharks game and the on-screen menu showed the movie title, "Reversal of
Fortune." I thought, maybe that is the Sharks game, given how the team has
turned things around in the past few games. The team has now won four straight,
including back-to-back shutouts on consecutive nights. (If anybody cares,
"Reversal of Fortune" has utterly nothing to do with hockey but I won't get
into that here.)
When the Sharks lost, I don't know, 15 of 19 games or
something like that and traded Douglas Murray for some draft picks, I figured
the team was cashing out this season and looking to rebuild for next year.
Maybe the current coach and GM would be around next season to see it through,
or maybe not. With the home-and-home Ducks series coming up, I presumed the
Sharks would lose both handily and then start trading away more players from
the current roster.
Then, a funny thing happened: The Sharks - gasp! -
won both games against Anaheim. Following that, the Sharks shut out Detroit,
sending home disappointed the throngs of Red Wings fans who regularly visit the
Sharks' arena. And on Saturday, the Sharks were outplaying the Coyotes and
still losing but managed to win, anyway.
So there you have it: Move to the acceptance phase
that the Sharks season is toast and that they will miss the playoffs. Then, the
team might suddenly be reborn as a winner. That's what we've seen the last four
games. Of course, it's only four games, but the Sharks playoff prospects, which
looked very bleak two weeks ago, now are looking much better. Can the Sharks
keep up the winning? That remains to be seen.
Maybe I should just
continue to write them off for this season. And that might be the key to a
long, successful post-season.
