Sharks sleepwalk thru early
start Red Wings extend home win streak to 23 with
3-2 win
The endless road trip continued in Detroit on
Sunday afternoon, and from the looks of things, it's turning into the road trip
from hell. San Jose turned in another lifeless performance and paid for it with
a 3-2 loss at Joe Louis Arena, extending the Red Wings win streak to an
incredible 23 games on home ice. Detroit is a combined 26-2-1 on home ice this
season. San Jose has won 31 games in total.
The nationally televised
"Hockey Day in America" game turned out to be a showcase of all the ills that
plagues San Jose right now.
San Jose continued to sleep walk through
the opening 20 minutes of a game they desperately needed to win. The Sharks
showed no intensity early, and it netted them another early deficit. It was an
interesting approach considering Detroit's home record, and the fact that the
Sharks have been wallowing. They've lost 6 of their last 8 games.
Henrik Zeterberg opened the scoring with his 13 of the season, sweeping home a
backhand shot 6:30 into the game. The Red Wings forward looped out of the left
corner then threw the puck on net as the Red Wings had traffic in the slot.
Sharks neteminder Antti Niemi picked up the puck too late, letting it slip
between his pads for the 1-0 Detroit lead.
Drew Miller made it 2-0
midway through the 2nd period snapping a rebound past Antti Niemi. The Red
Wings countered after a Sharks shot, then outnumbered San Jose to the net.
Miller fired the puck on net, then followed his own shot, putting low to the
stick side.
San Jose finally got on the board at 14:33 of the middle
period, but it was the Red Wings that put the puck into their own net. Logan
Couture was credited for touching the puck as it floated over the top of the
goal, but the puck hit Niklas Kronwall's stick, redirecting into over the goal
line.
Marc-Edouard Vlasic was injured early in the 3rd period after a
shot deflected upwards off Dan Boyle's skate, catching him in the face. Vlasic
had blood streaming down his face as he was helped off the ice.
Joe
Pavelski took a shot off his helmet moments later while trying to block a shot.
He would skate off on his own power. Colin White took a shot off the inside of
his right leg on the very next shift, hobbling him.
Darren Helm made
it 3-1 with a shot from the high slot that beat Niemi stick side. There wasn't
anything spectacular about the shot, nor was there any traffic in front of the
net. Niemi just flat out missed it.
Ryane Clowe took exception to a hit by Justin
Abdelkader, coaxing him into a scrap that clearly favored the Sharks forward.
Clowe landed two square rights to Abelkader's face Patrick Marleau breathed a
little life into the Sharks with a goal at 15:16 of the period, punching home a
loose puck in front of MacDonald. Brent Burns jammed the puck on net with
bodies disrupting the Red Wings goaltender's attention.
San Jose
pulled Niemi with a minute left, but they couldn't get the puck out of their
own end. It was a fitting end to a lethargic performance by San Jose.
