Resilient Sharks battle for 2
points 5 different SJ players score
The Sharks got back to winning on Thursday night,
showing some resilience in a 5-2 victory over the Dallas Stars to close out
their 4-game home stand. Resilience isn't a word you typically use when a team
wins by three goals, but San Jose battled their demons after squandering a
2-goal lead and stormed back with a flurry of goals to knock off the chippy
Stars for the second time this season.
Rather than buckle after the
Stars tied the game early in the 2nd period, San Jose fought back. They
literally fought back. Granted it was against ankle-biting pests like Steve
Ott, but they punched the Stars in the mouth and were rewarded for it with a
gaggle of goals.
Things started swimmingly for San Jose, who scored
goals 15 seconds apart on tallies by Logan Couture and Jamie McGinn.
Couture tallied his 11th goal of the year 67 seconds into the game, snapping a
shot from between the circles on an odd-man rush. Couture took a lateral feed
from Ryane Clowe in the slot as the two scampered up ice before beating Andrew
Raycroft.
McGinn made it 2-0 off the ensuing face off after the Sharks
worked the puck deep into the Star zone. The Sharks forward dug the puck out of
a scrum, then wristed a shot from a severe angle near the right corner. The
puck caught the inside of the left post and just like that, San Jose was up by
a pair of goals.
Mike Ribeiro cut the Sharks lead in half with 6:23 to
play before the intermission, sending a 35-foot shot past Anti Niemi from the
right wing boards. Ribeiro crossed the blueline and took a cross-ice pass from
Steve Ott, then pumped his 3rd goal of the season into the back of the net.
San Jose's division rival didn't change much in their approach to a
game plan since the two teams last met November 19th, except they showed some
bite after falling behind 2-0 early. Their agitating style got under the
Shark's skin, goading San Jose into penalties that mattered.
Frazer McLaren took a bad charging penalty 5:11 into
the 2nd period, setting up the dreaded Sharks penalty kill. Brendan Morrow made
San Jose pay by scoring his 4th goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2.
Ryane Clowe put the Sharks back on top 5 minutes later, scoring his
first goal in an eternity. Clowe scored off a wrap-around attempt by Joe
Thornton that fluttered out to Clowe near the bottom of the right circle.
Raycroft couldn't get across in time to stop Clowe's 6th of the season.
Brad Winchester pushed the lead back to two goals 1:55 after Clowe's
goal, deflecting a Brent Burns shot past Raycroft from the front of the net.
Winchester did what his teammates have been hard pressed to do of late, parking
himself in the abuse zone. That decision paid dividends as the Sharks forward
was able to screen Raycroft and create a redirect that found a hole.
Torrey Mitchell got in on the act, pumping home a one-time chance from the
right dot after Jamie Benn's errant pass from behind the Stars net floated out
to the Sharks forward. Mitchell was steaming toward the net as the puck setup
perfectly for the Howitzer shot.
