Couture bags a pair in
pre-season opener SJ scores three PP goals in
sacking of Ducks
The Sharks opened their pre-season schedule with a
quick flight down to Anaheim on Wednesday. San Jose unleashed a portion of
their revamped lineup and put on a scoring clinic en route to a 6-1 win. Logan
Couture scored a pair of goals, both coming in a 3-goal 2nd period. The Sharks
defense got in on the act, scoring a pair of goals.
As is customary in
the exhibition season, the Sharks sat most of their big guns, including Joe
Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Joe Pavelski.
Couture kicked off his
first appearance of the season with a 5-on-3 goal 5 minutes into the 2nd period
after Francois Beauchemin followed former Sharks Mark Bell to the penalty box.
Tommy Wingels put a wrist shot past Jeff Deslauriers 7 minutes later to push
the Ahead of Anaheim.
Andrew Gordon had opened the games scoring in
the 1st period with a goal off Thomas Greiss to give the Ducks an early lead.
That lead would seem like a distant memory after the Sharks added a 3rd goal
off a backhand chance by Couture with 5:12 to play in the middle period.
San Jose enjoyed their 3-goal period so much, they did
it again in the 3rd period. Jason Demers scored just 29 seconds into the final
frame with a long wrist-shot that found its way past Iiro Tarkki. The Ducks got
themselves in penalty trouble later in the game to setup a pair of power play
goals.
Sean Sullivan tipped home a John McCarthy attempt at 8:49 of
the 3rd period to push the Sharks lead to 4 goals.
Andrew Murray added
a goal late to put the game completely out or reach. Murray's goal also came on
the man-advantage, after Sheldon Brookbank was called for holding late.
Greiss finished with 19 saves to earn is first victor of the
pre-season.
