Young Sharks come up short vs.
Jets in B.C. Brad Winchester gets tryout
The Sharks young stars followed up their 6-1 win on
Sunday night over the Calgary Flames, by laying an egg in Penticton, British
Columbia on Monday. The newly renamed Winnipeg Jets prospects scored three
goals on odd-man rushes and tacked on an empty-net goal in a 4-0 thrashing of
the baby Sharks.
Edward Pasquale made 27 saves to post the shutout for
Winnipeg, who made its debut in the five team tournament. Mark Scheifele, Levko
Koper and Jason Gregoire each put pucks past Thomas Heemskerk in the rout.
Scheifele and Koper each added an assist.
Heemskerk was coming off a
superb performance against the Flames in his 40 minute stint on Sunday night,
but his defense let him down on a night that saw too many shots headed toward
the San Jose goal. San Jose pulled Heemskerk late in the game for a 6-on-4
opportunity, but the Jets netted an empty-net goal.
Winchester to
San Jose?
TSN Analyst Bob McKenzie tweeted that former St Louis
Blues left wing Brad Winchester is headed to Sharks training camp on a tryout.
Winchester has logged 323 games in the NHL, scoring 31 goals and adding 27
assists in 7 NHL seasons.
The 6'5", 215 lb winger played in 19 games
for Anaheim last season after playing the prior three years in St Louis.
Pavelski may wing it
McKenzie also posted a tweet
suggesting that Joe Pavelski may see time on the top line with Joe Thornton and
Patrick Marleau as a right wing. The addition of centerman Michal Handzus gives
Sharks head coach Todd McLellan to play with his lineup.
The line would
consist of three natural centers, and would still leave San Jose with Torrey
Mitchell, Logan Couture and Handzus as to anchor other lines.
