Wallin to San
Jose? Rumors swirl after TSN Report
The trade winds might be brewing in San Jose. TSN
columnist Darren Dreger reported on
Twitter on Wednesday that the Sharks are working on
a deal to bring defenseman Niclas Wallin to the Sharks from
Carolina.
San Jose is in immediate need of defensive help with both Dan
Boyle and Marc-Edouard Vlasic on the shelf with injuries. The absence of the
pair has forced San Jose to lean on rookie defenseman Jason Demers and Derek
Joslin.
Joslin committed a pair of errors in Tuesday night's 4-2 loss to
the Detroit Red Wings that exposed his inexperience. Demers has been part of
the shuttle between the Sharks minor league affiliate in Worcester and the NHL
this season.
Wallin turns 35 on February 20th, and would bring eight
plus years of NHL experience to the Sharks blueline
Walin has played all of his NHL games in a Hurricanes
uniform, helping Carolina to win the Stanley Cup in 2006.
The native of
Boden, Sweden stands 6'3", weighing in at 220 pounds. He's played in 517 NHL
games. Dreger reported that Wallin was scratched from Carolina's Wednesday
night game against the Calgary Flames.
San Jose isn't the only Pacific
Division team named in trade rumors on Wednesday. The Los Angeles Kings were
mentioned in a potential deal that would bring Atlanta Thrashers captain Ilya
Kovalchuk to the west coast.
Anaheim made an early splash by dealing
goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere to Toronto for former Sharks netminder Vesa
Toskala and forward Jason Blake.
