Scoring suddenly not a
problem Sharks bag 5 more goals in win over
LA
The Sharks followed up their nine goal outburst on
Monday night with another five tallies on Tuesday, this time on the road in
Southern California . The Sharks coasted to a 5-1 win over the host Los Angeles
Kings less than 24 hours after their track meet with the Calgary Flames. San
Jose would only muster 24 shots on goal, but they made them count. Three goals
came on the power play, giving the Sharks five goals on the man advantage in
two games.
Patrick Marleau and Ryane Clowe each bagged a pair of goals
to pace the Sharks, and goaltender Evgeni Nabokov was in the zone, stopping 36
of 37 shots on net.
Dustin Brown put the Sharks on the power play at
4:05 after slashing Dany Heatley, and the move would prove costly for the
Kings. After scoring two power play goals agains the Flames on Monday night,
San Jose picked up where they left off.
Patrick Marleau banged home
his 33rd goal of the season from the high slot after Joe Pavelski set him up
with a pass from behind the Los Angeles goal a minute and change into the Brown
penalty. Dan Boyle put a shot on goal and Pavelski beat out the nearest Kings
defender.
Boyle was whistled for a holding penalty at 7:29, and
Jarrett Stoll rocketed a shot off the left post on the ensuing power play. The
Sharks killed off the penalty, their 22nd consecutive kill, but it was what
Boyle did after the penalty expired that stung the Kings.
The Kings
misplayed the puck right as Boyle exited the box, allowing the Sharks
defenseman to scoop it up and race into the Kings zone. Two Los Angeles
defenders skated pat Boyle as he cut toward the slot to get a better angle on
Kings netminder Jonathan Quick. Boyle wound up on the 25-foot slap shot,
beating Quick for the 2-0 lead.
Ryane Clowe made it 3-0 with 3:11
remaining in the period after Jed Ortmeyer picked off a Kings pass in the Los
Angeles zone. Clowe was trailing on the Kings break and simply had to reverse
direction right in front of the Kings net, where he took a feed from Ortmeyer,
before depositing it past Quick for his 12th goal of the season.
Wayne
Simmonds got the Kings on the board 44 seconds into the 2nd period after Ryan
Smyth attempted a wrap-around shot that skittered through the crease from right
to left. Douglas Murray couldnt get back in time to stop Simmonds from
stabbing at the loose puck into the net. Evgeni Nabokov had committed himself
to the right post in order to take away the chance from Smyth.
San Jose went on the power play again at 13:15 of the
period after Brandon Segal was sent off for boarding Kent Huskins. The Sharks
almost blew the opportunity when Smyth grabbed a turnover and raced up the ice
for a short-handed breakaway chance. Nabokov stacked the pads to preserve the
two-goal lead, then Marleau extended that lead.
After the close call
by Smyth, the Sharks moved the puck up ice, and Marleau snapped home his second
power play tally of the night with an 18-foot wrister on a feed from Pavelski.
San Jose would get their third power play goal in as many chances at
11:59 of the 3rd period after Anze Kopitar was sent off for boarding Torrey
Mitchell. Ryane Clowe fired a put back chance from the left side past Quick
after Rob Blake fired the puck off the Kings netminder, and Manny Malhotra
chipped the deflection over to Clowe for the one-timer.
