Sharks dogged in the
desert Nabokov looks shakey in
return 1/15/08 - by Mike Lee
The
Sharks extended another road streak on Tuesday night, although not the kind
they had preferred, losing 5-3 to the Phoenix Coyotes in Arizona. Shane Doan
scored two goals and added an assist in a dismantling of Evgeni Nabokov, who
returned to the crease after sitting against the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.
Doan, Ed Jovanovski and Peter Mueller combined for 10 points (3 goals,
7 assists), including the capper 7 minutes into the 3rd period.
Nabokov looked out of kilter most of the evening, letting 4 pucks past him that
were typically stopped.
Things started well for San Jose, but every
time they scored the Coyotes would answer. Jonathan Cheechoo opened the games
scoring with his 6th goal of the season. Cheechoo cleaned up on a Joe Pavelski
shot that started with a mad rush in front of the Phoenix net.
Doan
would counter with his first goal of the night 3 minutes later. Play opened up
as the Sharks tried to counter on a Coyotes line change, that ended up with an
odd-man rush headed the other way. Mueller put a shot on goal that Nabokov
couldn't control, giving up a big rebound. Doan followed the play, banging in a
40 foot shot that sailed past the Sharks goaltender.
Joe Thornton put
the Sharks up 2-1 with 1:12 left in the opening period on a power play chance.
Matt Carle setup the goal with a spin-o-rama pass from the high slot. Thornton
one-timed Carle's pass from the right dot for his 14th of the season.
Nabokov's bad night turned worse just 39 seconds into the 2nd period.
Jovanovski gathered a Doan pass near the right point before side stepping a
Sharks defender then uncorking a 40-foot shot that beat Nabokov to the glove
side.
The Coyotes capitalized on a bad bounce that ended up in the
Sharks net midway through the period. Mathias Tjarnqvist threw a puck on goal
from the left wing, pin-balling it off Nabokov back into the slot.
Unfortunately, Carle was skating toward the Sharks goal in an attempt to steer
Mikael Tellqvist away from the net, but the puck hit Carle in the skate,
redirecting into the net.
Curtis Brown tied the game at 3-3 with 36 seconds left
in the period on a deflection off his skate. Joe Pavelski bounced a shot of
Byzgalov that kicked out into the slot where a streaking Brown chipped it in
with his skate as he was braking toward the goal.
Nabokov let in a
softie just 49 seconds into the 3rd period to allow the Coyotes to grab the
lead back. Joel Perrault put a shot on goal from the right boards that Nabokov
had to dive to stop. The puck kicked back out to Perrault, but Nabokov had a
tough time getting to his feet, which allowed the Coyotes forward to put it on
net unobstructed.
Phoenix pushed their lead to 2 goals 6 minutes later
on a Doan goal that could have easily bee avoided. Jovanovski pumped a shot
from the blueline, again forcing a big rebound on Nabokov. As the puck trickled
into the slot, three Sharks defenders allowed Doan to grab the rebound and
sweep his 14th goal of the season into a wide open Sharks net.
Game
Notes:
After his slew of gaffs on Sunday versus the Anaheim Ducks,
defenseman Alexei Semanov found himself back in the press box. Marcel Goc was
also a scratch for San Jose.
