Dimitrakos traded to
Philly SJ gets a 3rd round pick 3/9/06 -
by Mike Lee
The Sharks didn't pull off any blockbuster deals
at the NHL trade deadline on Thursday afternoon, but they did alleviate some of
the buildup at forward by trading right wing Niko Dimitrakos to the
Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a 3rd round draft pick in the 2006 NHL
Entry Draft.
The move was necessitated by the acquisition of left wing
Ville Nieminen from the New York Rangers on Wednesday. The log jam at wing
meant that Dimitrakos had to either be sent down to the minors or
dealt.
The club had grown impatient with Dimitrakos' inconsisitency in
play this season. The Boston native was originally drafted by San Jose in the
fifth round (155th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, and played in 153
games with the Sharks. He recorded 53 points (19 goals, 34 assists) and 83
penalty minutes over the course of three seasons in San Jose.
This season, he scored 16 points (four goals, 12 assists) in 45
games with San Jose.
The Sharks essentially recoup the 3rd round pick they gave up to land
Nieminen on Wednesday, although it's likely that Philadelphia will finish with
a better record than the Rangers.
