3rd period outburst propels
SJ Cheechoo leads with hat trick 2/1/06 - by Mike Lee
The Sharks awoke from their
funk and played one of their better periods of the season to defeat the Mighty
Ducks of Anaheim 6-4 at the Arrowhead Pond on Wednesday night. Jonathan
Cheechoo recorded his 2nd hat trick of the season, which included the game
winner late in the 3rd period. San Jose exacted a little revenge on rookie
goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, who shut out the Sharks last week, peppering him
with four 3rd period goals on 18 shots.
San Jose had to play catch up during the first two periods, even though they
had a golden opportunity to jump out to an early lead after Andy McDonald and
Francois Beauchemin were sent to the penalty box 13 seconds apart. San Jose
failed to convert, which allowed former Shark Teemu Selanne to open the scoring
with his 25th goal of the season on a power play after Cheechoo was sent for
tripping.
Cheechoo's big night started off with a fluke goal with four minutes remaining
in the opening period. Cheechoo beat Bryzgalov after whiffing on his first
attempt, catching the Ducks goaltender with a follow up attempt that trickled
over the goal line as Bryzgalov was backing into the goal.
McDonald recaptured the lead 31 seconds into the 2nd period on the power play.
The Sharks would reciprocate with a power play goal of their own two minutes
later, when Cheechoo deposited his second of the evening. Niko Dimitrakos
setup up Cheechoo's tally from his new found position on the point while the
Sharks skated with the man advantage.
San Jose grabbed the lead for the first time at 2:31 courtesy of a 5-on-3 power
play after the Niedermayer brothers were both called for hooking 29 seconds
apart. Mark Smith was credited on assists from Scott Hannan and Josh Gorges.
The lead would be short lived as Nabokov gift wrapped a goal 21 seconds after
Smith's goal. Trying to clear the puck, the Sharks netminder sent a weak pass
up the right wing boards in an attempt to force the break. Beauchemin
intercepted the puck just outside the Sharks blueline and raced in uncontested
on Nabokov, before sliding a pass to the off wing where Chris Kunitz tapped in
the tying goal.
San Jose would recapture the lead on a power play goal from Tom Preissing at
12:56 of the 3rd on assists from Joe Thornton and Hannan.
Cheechoo notched his third goal of the night after stealing the puck inside his
own zone then racing up the right wing before rifling a slap shot past
Bryzgalov.
Dustin Penner made things interesting by scoring a goal with 23.5 seconds left
in regulation after Anaheim head coach Randy Carlyle pulled Bryzgalov for the
extra attacker. Anaheim moved the puck into the Sharks zone and forced a
faceoff in the San Jose zone, but Nils Ekman scored an empty netter right
before time expired to end the game.
Notes:
Cheechoo tied Jeff Friesen ('97-'98) and Owen Nolan ('96-'97) for 2nd most
goals in a season with his 31st of the year. Nolan holds the franchise record
with 44 goals in a season, set during the 1999-2000 season.
