Our weekly selection of
hockey moves that leave us scratching our heads. Started back in 2007, HotW was
an institution around these parts or years. As research time became more
scarce, we let it lapse, but by the grace of a Gordie Hull Hat Trick, it's
back!
We don't recommend that any of these feats be attempted at home,
nor do we suggest that you you these fine folks as role models for your
children.

Keith Ballard - Florida
Panthers
Keith Ballard may have solidified himself as dumbest hockey
player ever. After Ilya Kovalchuk beat the defender on a breakaway, and then on
a put back for a goal, Ballard took out his frustration on his own goaltender.
Ballard swung his stick in an attempt to smash it on the goal post, but instead
he clipped Vokoun in the side of the head.
Ballard was facing Vokoun
as he takes a mighty cut, catching the goaltender above the left ear. Then he
inexplicably takes another cut at the post, smashing his stick, before skating
away.
Not sure what stick to skull sounds like, but Ballard had to
figure it doesn't sounds like metal pipe. The overhead replay shows the
severity of the impact.
Vokoun was taken off the ice on a stretcher,
wearing a c-spine collar as a precautionary measure. With several medical folks
huddled around the fallen net minder, Ballard stood behind his own bench trying
to figure out how many minutes it would take the Panthers brass to send him
packing.
