Sharks lose big on back-to-back
nights Kings let San Jose have it at the
Crypt 3/31/2025 - By Mike Lee
Following their 6-1 pasting by the New York
Rangers on Saturday night, the Sharks limped into Los Angeles on Sunday and
took an even worse beating. With 10 games to go in this season of lessons, the
Sharks played a disheveled, unmotivated game that resulted in an 8-1 loss that
begs the question, why bother? After impressive wins over Toronto and
Boston in the past 7 days, the Sharks settled themselves into what should be
the best odds at winning the Draft lottery for the second consecutive year.
Drawing to within a point of the Chicago Blackhawks, the Sharks have come back
to earth and are alinging with what should rightly be there's. The first
overall draft pick this summer. Los Angeles is still competing for a
better position in the Western Conference standings as the playoffs quickly
approach. Like the Rangers 24 hours earlier, the Kings are locking into playoff
mode and they let the Sharks know it. A pair of 1st period goals was
just the entree. San Jose didn't do themselves any favors in the opening frame
by missing on a 2-man advantage that could have made this game more
competitive. The Kings brushed off Cam Lund's 2nd career NHL goal in
as many nights by putting 4 pucks past Georgie Romanov in the 2nd period.
Penalties Killed the Sharks. Los Angeles converted on 2 of 5 chances to help
them runaway with the game. Mario Ferraro's affinity to spending time
in the penalty box setup the first of two Warren Foegele goals.
Foegele would score his 2nd goal with 57 seconds left in the middle period.
It's bad enough giving up goals in the last minute of a period, so the Sharks
decided to give up another one 35 seconds later.
It was a clear indication that the Sharks threw in
the towel. The absence of any defensive initiative was on full display. This
was a beaten hockey team trying to get to the off season. The Kings
scored goals 23 seconds apart in the 3rd period when Andrei Kuzmenko and Trevor
Lewis beat Romanov late in the period. San Jose's defense has
surrenedered 14 goals in less than 24 hours. Game Notes:
* The sharks continue to take buckets of penalties that end up
being back breakers. san Jose allowed 2 goals to the Kings power play in 5
chances. * Goaltender Georgie Romanov's goals against average
ballooned to 4.99 after giving up 8 goals in the contest. His save percentage
also plummeted to .829 * Noah Gregor, Lucas Carlsson, Timothy
Liljegren, and Shakir Mukhamadullin all turned in -3 games. San Jose was a
combined -25. * It was one of those nights. The biggest hit laid out
by a Shark may have been Cam Lund's contact...on Macklin Celebrini. The two
crumpled to the ice after running into each other in the 3rd period. *
The Sharks take a day off on Monday then wrap up their quick jaunt through
Southern California on Tuesday when they take on the Ducks at Honda Center.
