One year ago, the Sharks traveled to Tampa Bay
to play the Lightning and limped out of Amelie Arena after losing 6-0. A year
later, many of the names on Shark jerseys are different, but the California
boys endured a worse outcome on Thursday night as the Lightning blitzed them in
a 8-1 pasting. Tampa Bay jumped on the Sharks for 5 goals in the 1st period,
then added 3 more for good measure to snap the Sharks 3-game winning streak.
It was a simple lesson for the Sharks. Nothing comes easy in the NHL
and there are plenty of good teams just waiting to maul you if you let them.
The Sharks are still a young team and the stunning effects of a quick
goal barrage took the wind out of the visitors early in the game.
It
started early and didn't let up all night. Tampa lit up goaltender Vitek
Vanecek for 4 goals in the first 9 minutes of the game, starting with a Cam
Atkinson tip of a Conor Geekie shot that eluded the Sharks goaltender 86
seconds into the game.
Tampa would then score 3 goals in a span of 86
seconds, starting with a Geekie goal at 7:29. The Lightning forward carried the
puck into the Sharks zone then whipped a shot past Vanecek from just inside the
left circle.
Brandon Hagel would add a pair of goals 23 seconds apart.
His first came with a little puck luck after a Jake Guentzel shot hit a Sharks
defender in the slot before deflecting to Hagel who was cutting across the top
of the Sharks crease. Hagel collected the puck then waited out Vanecek, who had
to go down to try and defend.
Hagel added his 12th of the season by beating Jan
Rutta to a loose puck then racing past the flat-footed defender and deeking
Vanecek to his right before sliding the puck home.
Guentzel converted
on a power play chance at 17:45 after rookie defenseman Jack Thompson was sent
off for tripping. Victor Hedman sent a long pass from the point to the area our
front just wide of the left post. Guentzel redirected the shot perfectly
playing the angle to wrap the puck around Vanecek.
Sharks head coach
Ryan Warsofsky elected to start the 2nd period with Mackenzie Blackwood in net.
Vanecek's final line was 19:46 of ice time, 12 shots face, 7 saves.
Anthony Cirelli picked up where his teammates left off redirecting a Ryan
McDonagh shot past Blackwood's skate and into the Sharks net. Sharks head coach
Ryan Warsofsky elected to challenge the play, citing that Cirelli was offside.
After a lengthy review the challenge was rejected and Cirelli's goal stood.
A hooking penalty to Atkinson at 15:49 setup a late power play for San
Jose, but they couldn't apply any pressure on Vasilevskiy.
Defenseman
Nick Perbix tacked on a 7th goal with 1:28 remaining in the period on a shot
from the inside of the right circle. The Lightning moved the puck out of the
left corner, then caught the Sharks 5 defenders all collapsing around the left
side of the net, allowing Brayden Point to move the puck to the off wing where
Perbix snapped it past Blackwood.
Game Notes: * Vitek
Vanecek has given up 10 goals in his last 4 periods of play.
* Macklin
Celebrini's scoring streak ended at 5 games. Celebrini fell just short of
matching Connor McDavid and Patrik Laine as the only 18-year-olds to record a
6-game scoring streak.
* William Eklund was one of many Sharks who had
rough nights, but the forward was a team worse -4 on the night. He failed to
record a shot and was only credited with a single blocked shot as his only
statistical accomplishment of the night.
* Brayden Point recorded 4
assists in the game.
* Tampa blocks 25 shots, which equates to too
many long distance shots from a team that doesn't park guys out in front to try
and tip. They either need to develop a guy to learn to play there or change the
approach on where they are shooting from. Goaltenders like Andrei Vasilevskiy
are too good for the bomb and pray approach.
