Mike Lee
As veteran players ready themselves for the official
start of training camp festivities, the NHL experience ended for several
prospects on Tuesday. Four farmhands were assigned to their minor league clubs
and two others were given their outright release.
2004 4th round draft pick Jason Churchill, 2005 5th round picks Taylor Dakers
and Derek Joselin and 2005 2nd round pick Marc-Edourd Vlasic all had their
taste of what could be someday end.
Defenseman Matt Deschamps and center Ryan Salvis were released.
GM Doug Wilson also dipped into the free agent market for the first time this
off season by signing Group III Unrestricted Free Agent right wing Josh
Langfeld to a one-year deal.
Langfeld has 51 games of NHL service under his belt, spread across three season
with the Ottawa Senators. The right wing scored all seven of his career NHL
goals with the Senators in 2003-04.
The third round selection (66th overall) in 1997 finished sixth in scoring for
the Binghamton Senators in 2004-05, posting 57 points (32 goals and 25 assists)
along with 75 penalty minutes in 74 games.
The six-foot-three, 215-pound native of Fridley, Minnesota played four seasons
(1997-01) with the University of Michigan, including scoring the game-winning,
overtime goal to defeat Boston College for the 1998 NCAA Championship.
