Sharks draft
Setoguchi SJ moves up to 8 spot 7/30/05 - By Mike Lee
The Sharks traded three draft
picks to the Atlanta Thrashers in order to move up to the eighth overall
selection in today's NHL Entry Draft. San Jose then used the pick to take Devin
Setoguchi, a 5'11" right wing out of Taber Alberta. Setoguchi scored 64 points
(33 goals, 31 assists) last season for the Sakskatoon Blades of the Western
Hockey League.
Setoguchi was ranked 10th among North American skaters,
by the NHL's Central Scouting Bureau. The international Scouting Service had
him ranked 25th among all skaters. The move one was an interesting one, given
Setoguchi's scouting service ratings. Giving up three draft picks to move up
four spots in the first round seems like a high price to pay for someone who
may have been available much later in the draft.
Sharks General
Manager Doug Wilson alluded in a televised interview immediately following the
selection that the Sharks felt that Setoguchi fits the Sharks mold. Wilson also
alluded that the Sharks felt Setoguchi was going to be taken before the 12th
overall pick.
San Jose traded the 12th, 49th (2nd round), and 207th
(7th round) overall picks to Atlanta, who would then move the 12th overall pick
to The New York Rangers later in the draft.
