Hannan named to Team
Canada Sharks blueliner to participate in '04
WCoH 7/29/04 - By Mike Lee
The
Sharks continued to earn dividends on their outstanding run last season, by
having defenseman Scott Hannan named to Team Canada for the 2004 World Cup.
Hannan got the nod as a replacement on Thursday after injured Colorado
Avalanche defenseman Rob Blake was forced to withdraw. Hannan will join fellow
Shark teammates Patrick Marleau, Marco Sturm, Vesa Toskala, Christian Ehrhoff,
Marcel Goc, and Nils Ekman in this Summer's tournament.
Hannan was the
Sharks best blueliner this past season, leading the team in average ice time
during the regular season (23:41) and in the playoffs. His play during the
Sharks run through the Western Conference Finals caught the attention of Team
Canada's administrative chief Wayne Gretzky.
The 2004 tournament
begins August 30th in seven venues across North America and Europe and ends on
September 14th at the Air Canada Centre in Tornoto. The Czech Republic,
Finland, Germany, Sweden, Canada, Russia, Slovakia, and the United States will
suit up twenty skaters and three goaltenders for the tournament.
Training camps for each team will open on August 20th. Two four-team divisions
will partake in round-robin play, before participating in single-elimination
playoff games, beginning with the quarterfinals on September 6th.
